Amazing interview with a doctor from London hospital on BBC News saying what a lot of us on here have been saying.

The whole nation needs to listen to his words before tonight.

You may not know it - he says - you may not even know you had Covid. But if you go out tonight without a mask and mix with others you WILL kill people and WILL have blood on your hands.

The consequences of tonight will; not be seen till mid January but what you do tonight will be set in motion.

He has seen whole families catching it and coming in to his hospital and parents AND children all dying one after the other.


Everyone wh breaks the rules should be put in a room and told to watch this.

A friend works at MRI.
She and all her staff on duty last weekend were vaccinated, and she tells me all the hospital were as well.
This weekend they are vaccinating the rest of the duty staff who are on this rota.

By the New Year they will have all had their first dose.

I agree there probably should be more of what you describe. There’s a long-standing problem in the NHS (with some notable exceptions eg London Stroke Network, various cancer networks etc) when it comes to sharing scarce clinical resources. It’s exacerbated by staff vacancies but it’s wider than that. The Nightingales have shone a light on this. NHS Managers and Ministers claimed Credit for the Nightingales so they should open to criticisms over this.

Also, wonder if Covid fatalities amongst several clinicians who volunteered to return to the NHS may have scared decision makers.

Capacity has been stretched further in this 2nd / 3rd wave. because hospitals have been trying to maintain the range of clinical services. Staff sickness will also be a big factor affecting capacity.

I know little about ICUs but it’s very dangerous for them to run at 100% capacity because there’s nowhere for extremely ill people to go without discharging patients eg back to wards. Capacity has been increased to 120% compared to the start of the pandemic but staffing capacity hasn’t really increased.

(My unsaid implications are the chances of covid to mutate into another strain in the future in the non vaccinated populous and also the same point but abroad, and future restrictions on travel due to covid uncertainty. I'm perhaps getting a little ahead of myself. I really don't foresee the world ever going back to how it was, and my main past-time, travel, is likely going to look very very different)

I think those who have had it are still advised to receive a vaccine to maximise their immunity although it's not so important. It's possible that immunity from vaccination will outlast immunity from infection but why I don't know. I have heard Professor Sarah Gilbert say this several times but I have not understand why the mechanism would lead to different antibody responses. It might be due to the viral load.

In regards to the virus dying if we are all immune, yes it would eventually die out although there'll be a similar (but not identical) virus in some host animal (bat?). Strictly speaking viruses are not alive in that they have no independent existence outside a host cell (they can survive for a short while only).

These are just my opinions and they could be wrong!

From what that says, and the press conference yesterday, they advise, they do not confirm. This is the only reference to 'teachers' on the page, and makes clear that this is just a recommendation.

"Vaccination of those at increased risk of exposure to SARS-CoV-2 due to their occupation could also be a priority in the next phase. This could include first responders, the military, those involved in the justice system, teachers, transport workers, and public servants essential to the pandemic response. Priority occupations for vaccination are considered an issue of policy, rather than for JCVI to advise on. JCVI asks that the Department of Health and Social Care consider occupational vaccination in collaboration with other government departments."
 
This country is totally desensitised to covid deaths and it's quite obvious that unfortunately most don't take the PM or the rest of his cronies seriously anymore. It's an incredibly dangerous combination. I remember when I told my mum that a few hundred had died of it in the earlier weeks of the outbreak and she was shocked. Just been on the phone to her now and mentioned the 900+ of the last two days and it was barely acknowledged. My mum is a compassionate, considerate person too. I know its a normal reaction to try and get by and cope, but it's incredibly concerning. It can only lead to people letting down their guard more often.

Absolutely boggles the mind that we're not in full lockdown. People in other countries are literally looking on in amazement at us in terms of how badly we're dealing with this.

Im hoping when people go back to work (from home mostly) next week, they will be too occupied to mix for piss ups.

I think it’s likely a significant number of people have been having friends over this Christmas period.
 
Regarding the vaccines, what does the first dose do? How immune are you from it and does it stop you spreading it?

Won't they just be then instead taking it to new people outside their usual bubble?

No country has handled this perfectly and stupidity is alive and well elsewhere. This one is truly boggling.

Your right, I remember how shocked i was when 100 deaths were announced, then feeling sick at 300 deaths.
Now 600 deaths a day feels like a positive result, Heart breaking

No specific answer.

It builds an immunity over about 3 weeks, with (I would guess) very little at all for the first week. "How immune" is going to vary from person to person.

"Does it stop you spreading it" - nobody knows. There's no evidence that it stops transmission, but there's no evidence that it doesn't. Too soon to tell basically.
