Bluemoon Angling Thread

Fuck me gents, I look at that and realise I'm as much of a fair weather fisherman as I am a plastic city fan nowadays. You were obviously going to catch f-all, but kudos for being arsed to give it a go.
I was that cold when I packed up I threw all my bait in to stop me being daft enough to go back on tomorrow. I don't think I've ever fished a water so exposed to the elements. It can get cold up there in summer but was fuckin' freezing yesterday!

I've been out on Dowry reservoir near M62 Saddleworth junction today for a spot of pike fishing. When I got there a third of it was iced over. I lost 2 treble hook traces plumbing the depth and another near the side. Fortunately @Didsbury Dave turned up and kindly gave me a couple of rigs, thanks pal.

Only managed to put one rod out with a Joey mackerel on, was too cold to rig another rod up. Snow was coming down sideways and I managed till 3:30 before I packed up, and that's the third blank on the trot now!

I'm determined to catch a good pike this winter and by good I'll willingly accept a 10lb fish.
Anybody ever told you you are a bloody nutter. That is not fishing weather!

Haha. I used to work outside at height hanging of telecoms structures so cold weather doesn't bother me or it didn't. I think I'm going soft nowadays pal, either that or I've got the fishing bug back. And if I have I get the urge to go whenever I can, come wind rain or shine: )

That used to be me too. I remember vividly fishing for a Grayling on the Swale in a blizzard. I now have 4c minimum rule (As long as it is also dry and not blowing a bloody hooly ;-) ). Tbf fly fishing ain’t fun when your fingers can’t feel the line they are supposed to be figure of eighting back. Casting ain’t easy either when your rod rings are frozen up. I think I read somewhere that at a certain temperature fish go torpid and won’t feed.

you see I have my excuses lined up and regimented.

I started watching this yesterday after your recommendation, really good , I'm upto episode 4 and will continue after the game and the darts.
I absolutely loved it, there's another one, that someone said was better, but i can't think what it is, bernard cribbings makes it for me, his commentary is really "old fashioned " he's not bothered about weights, just the beauty of the fish and surrounding nature, similar to my outlook

Been out fishing the Upper Trent today. Fished worse weather but a bit nippy and still the odd pocket of snow lying around. River looking in great nick so I trotted a stick float down for 5 and a half hours without a sniff of a bite.

Only when I got in the car did I realise that kick-off was at 4.30, not 5.30 so I missed the first half arriving home in time for the second half which, as you may be aware, we lost 1-0.

I agree on the weights issue. I chase figures / outputs every day at work , I cant be bothered doing the same when I'm fishing. And that's the reason I'll never own a set of scales .

Whilst I agree with the sentiment, I do carry 2 sets of scales in case I accidentally get a big one. I have a set which weighs up to 4lbs in 1 ozs in case I get a decent perch or roach and a digital set for anything bigger.

I once caught a barbel on the Wye I reckon was 13lbs but didn't have a set of scales. Still pisses me off that I'll never know.

That's a huge fish pal, did you take a pic so we can guestimate the weight?

No. It was one of those days where you just land on them and I had 12 barbel. My mates were miles downriver so I just decided to get it back into the water quickly. Sensible decision really and I try to convince myself that I overestimated it anyway. But I'll never know.

Incidentally, I saw you'd got a Prologic suit, have you solved the cold feet conundrum ? I've invested £45 in a pair of Sealskinz extreme cold weather socks because that's the last chink in my cold-weather armour. Not sure I'm convinced yet because I haven't really tested them in below zero conditions.

Yes, the Prologic suit was a fine investment mate. I have a pair of olive green boots with fake lambswool inner liners. They have foam inserts. They may be 'boom 80' boots. Pretty warm with two pairs of socks on.

As for scales, I've caught good fish myself in the past without being able to weigh them. I always carry my Korum digital scales and weigh sling nowadays, just incase: )
