Yes sadly most will be too frail for the treatment techniques used in ICU.

This will be an issue with the icu capacity problem, this probably won’t go down until vaccinations have moved down into the lower age group.

I know it’s a big statement from Boris about the vaccinations but if it comes off we should start seeing a much improved situation by early April.sadly there could be another 30,000 plus deaths before then.

Hopefully the vaccine programme will run relatively smoothly. Fingers crossed.

There’s clearly an under reporting of cases or less testing to be getting those death figures from the reported cases.

I never said they weren’t doing better than us overall but the current daily death numbers are just as shocking.

I don't know anything more about the German figures than the headline numbers. Happy to learn more if you can post links.

CFR (deaths/ reported cases) varies very widely between countries dependent on testing policy and reporting practice eg Denmark tests far more than anyone else.

My stepmother had antibodies 3 months ago.

She’s now ill having caught it off my dad for a 2nd time.

She’s been in bed this week with it.

Unless there’s a problem with the antibody test (there isn’t) or the Covid test itself (possible but unlikely), then you can definitely get it again and be ill with it.
Hope she makes a full recovery mate.

It’s why, whilst Germany may well have dealt with it better than we have, I have always been sceptical of drawing comparisons from the numbers.

Similarly with Spain, it’s a grim topic but is important, don’t they count their deaths differently and are more strict when Covid can be mentioned?

Modelling seems to suggest 30,000 would be at the most optimistic possible end of projections, alas. Depends on our behaviour, of course.

30,000- 88,000 range projected by this so far very reliable model here.

Excess deaths rather than official death numbers are generally seen as the most reliable comparator. By that measure, I think we were the worst in Europe first wave, don't have a ready reference though.

My niece, who is a GP, reckoned the antibody tests were only 60-70% accurate and that was a few months back so possibly your stepmother had a false positive?
there was a guy on one of the Alex Belfield videos and for some reason they doubled up when they sent him a test kit.he did it and sent it back and the other kit he wiped it on the leaf of his palm tree 'strange thing to do' and they both came back positive

I reckon the care home scandal, as I call it, is what made us the worst.

We locked down a bit late but not late enough to show the numbers we did, I think clearly out the hospitals and sending the virus into care homes, it’s what caused that spike in the first wave.

For me it’s the biggest fuck up.

Tsshh and here was me waiting for your approval, will a bank transfer be ok?
Funny as last year we had four hospital doctors living next door in a house share, and they never once mentioned it being a load bollocks, guess you live and learn
Did they join in or just come out and bow?

to be fair I'm pretty sure the palm tree is immune to Covid.

Again, don't have time to look up references, but my understanding is there's nothing unusual internationally about our relative rate in care homes.

However, when cases were doubling every 3-4 days, the delay in lock down was critical, and almost certainly cost around half of the deaths and a significant extra period in lock down. There is published research on this.

That lesson was never learned, and we have just lived through a direct repeat. Which is criminal negligence IMO.

I’m interested to see similar examples in other countries regarding the care homes.
