Seems odd they would post a clip directly under the headline that differs from what they’re saying.
What seems odd is people using this situation as an opportunity to bash our government, that have already condemned the actions and called for a peaceful transition of power, behaving in a similar way to other Western European powers.

No, I really do not underestimate it.

The UK and US are military allies on the world stage, with actual enemies out there. There are consequences to us not being a united front.

Ireland isn’t a military country and your greatest risk is pissing the Americans off.
Which is a very consequential event. Ireland and the US have deep bonds

It is if the ethos of collective responsibility still subsists, especially as she is charged with upholding law and order. On that basis, she is perfectly entitled and arguably required to comment on the breakdown of the rule of law within the seat of democracy of such a close ally, aided and abetted, as it was, by its Head of State.

Home Secretary, after PM and possibly Chancellor of the Exchequer, is the highest office in the land. Of course she can comment. To suggest it is beyond her remit to do so is absurd. She’s not a fucking diplomat.
No it isn’t, it’s literally not her job to pass comment and she will have been briefed not to stick her head above the parapet, with the Prime Minister making an official statement.

There’s some very intelligent people in this thread failing to understand this and it’s bemusing me.

The biggest risk of pissing the Americans off, in particular the new administration, is to continue to appease the present incumbent. Even Johnson gets it now.

Fucking hell mate, how are we appeasing it?

Our Prime Minister literally condemned what happened and called for power to be peacefully transitioned.

I think you honestly want someone in the Cabinet to call him a **** on TV.

It’s less consequential than us doing so, that is my whole point.
Then youre wrong. It isnt. And why are we grading it anyway, and why does it even matter? Im at a total loss as to why this derailment has happened, beyond you said something a but daft and instead of dropping it are digging in needlessly.

I'm talking about Patel who has been inexplicably doing her best to skirt around the issue when she should be presenting a united front with Johnson.
And you're worried that if she does we'll piss off the Americans????

So because we are a neutral country we would suffer less. I don't think that's how it works personally, but this isn't a hill I would die on.
You are welcome to your opinion. Xx

You can say I’m digging needlessly but it doesn’t make you correct.

This derailment happened, because you and @west didsblue and others, have used the US crisis to attack our government.

Stop doing it and the conversation will return to what it’s supposed to be.

And just to conclude, The UK has a bigger presence on the global stage, I love Ireland but it’s true, if our Foreign Secretary said something controversial, especially against a NATO ally, it has greater consequences for NATO in the world.

When Trump was criticising NATO two years ago, we were all up in arms about how he’s undermining it. The situation is the same for us.

I never said you would suffer less, I’ve absolutely no idea what that means in the context to this discussion.

If Germany puts out a statement, it has greater significance than if Austria does. They’re a more powerful country and a leading member of NATO, it’s a fact of life.

We have exactly the same with the US. They are a bigger country and have more presence on the world stage. It’s why the world is focused on this and hasn’t been focused on the situation in Belarus.

Its no slight on Ireland, I love the country.

Mate you have totally misunderstood me then, and misrepresented what I have said. I have not attacked our govt. I think they have done a great job and I wholly support them speaking up. It was the right thing to do, and vital that we did.

Is that clear to you now?

Well I apologise if I have misunderstood your position.

I thought the opposite.

Let’s move on from it and get back to Trump and his supporters being wankers.
