I have always thought it was contrived by the media and fuelled by Ferguson. Liverpool v United was never as big as City/United when I was growing up in Manchester, not even close. There was a broader Manchester v Merseyside hooligan rivalry.
It changed when football went global and the Liverpool v United match is now the ultimate derby for the fanboys from Essex to Mumbai.

The year we were relegated on the last day v’s Luton. That was the year that the Utd rd lot decided to ramp up the rivalry with Liverpool.

As far as they were concerned, we were going down and they wanted a derby to replace ours.
The majority of the El Plastico fan base think this has been a derby since football began.
Even Ferguson and the hierarchy at both clubs including the Media think it began at year dot. And they would be right. If year dot is 1983.

The first ever pay per view match on Sky was Colchester v City. Colchester's ground is tiny and they knew they'd get plenty of City fans subscribing.

And it was 7 quid to get in the terraces behind the goal and 7.95 to subscribe I saved 95p going to the game... ignoring a fortune in petrol etc :-)

The headline on the back page of the daily mail shows Arsenal celebrating the first goal last night & bleats out about no hugging.

WHAT ?

A TV recording actually shows 8 of them hugging kissing & jumping on shoulders immediately before this foto.

This is lying & manipulation big style. It makes you think what do they do for the rags & dippers ?

I watched that and they hugged for ages, whispering to each other, then all moved away from each other and did something with their hands
