Science for dummies question, but why would it be different for AZ than Pfizer?

Am I right in suggesting the 12 week gap has been fully trialled and proven to work best with AZ?

I'd like to add another question to this. How do they check someone's immunity post vaccination?

I agree, I know they are not as effective but it shows they are making an effort. As regards medication proof most people with an illness or a condition that requires continuous medication will have a NHS prescription exempt card, they should be made to show that.

44 deaths - was 66 last week

1283 cases - was 1533 last week

At 12,5 % positivity

Look at the insert. You can see how cases in the active (red) and placebo (blue) change over the three weeks post dose one.

Efficacy = (difference between blue and red lines)/(height of blue line)

The average efficacy isn't so far from 30% at 21 days when dose 2 happens. But you can see how the lines have separated, and forward efficacy could be expected to be much better.

And this is for the average population in the Pfizer trial; the population vaccinated initially In Israel will be much more vulnerable and potentially have a weaker response to vaccine.

Scotland update:

Less good news on deaths and hospital data

92 deaths - was 79 last week - one of the highest single day numbers ever

1656 cases - was 1949 last week

At 7.5% positivity - which is good - it was 10.2% last week

But 2003 now in hospital - up 14 and first time ever above 2000.

And 156 on ventilators - up 6

Wondering if anyone can help, the Mrs has a positive test and I've ordered a home test now. But as we're both self isolating how do I post it? I can't find anything about couriers who pick up tests?

Did you order it on the gov website ? They should tell you about returning it , you book the courier on the site and they collect the same day , you do the test right before they are coming to collect it , go back and have a look

when you get the test read it all and it should tell you how to book the courier

Nicola Sturgeon just claimed the reason England are now doing fewer daily new vaccinations is that they have belatedly decided to do what Scotland has done from day one. Treat care homes as a priority.

Scotland are now well over 90% covered. And so now outside care home daily vaccinations in Scotland will noticably accelerate whilst England's may fall.

England have - she says - now decided this is important to do too.

All the deaths yesterday in England out of hospital (many in care homes) show Scotland got this right and England did not. A very unusually high number of those England deaths were not in hospital creating that unexpectedly high total of 1610 when just half of them were in England hospitals.

Nicola Sturgeon denies this and says there is no change in the modelling and they are on track.

So she asks again - why are GPs not getting the vaccine they keep asking for to vaccinate in surgeries the over 80s.

More or less what I posted yesterday may have happened, think in a couple of weeks both will be at the same point by different routes. Which is the best route is a debate that will be had later I suppose.

Yorkshire by the way IS the stand out region for suppressing this wave as they are sitting at about 2000 cases or below and are much bigger than North East. They used to be very similar to the NW which has been about 3 or 4 times higher than them lately and is still more than double even though the NW has come down in lockdown.

The media reported recently that London complained because pro rata Yorkshire was getting more vaccination doses than anyone.

In the weekly Pop Score tables of the England regions I post every few days here Yorkshire moved in past weeks from one of the most impacted areas to now the single best and even ahead of the South West - which as a small rural region has always had the fewest cases and was used by Boris to justify the tiers - saying locking down Devon and Cornwall would be unfair.

The SW rose along with the south. Yorkshire did not rise along with the rest of the north. Seemingly as it had the lowest % of the new variant It was in single figures still pre Christmas when the NW was 30% or so.

So it may be they also are now getting pro rata the most vaccine their continuing stand out success in this wave is down to both those factors.

I moved to Sheffield from rural Cambridgeshire last month; I've been struck by how compliant folk are here with mask wearing (even outside), distancing in supermarkets etc. Travelling round Essex the lack of masks in indoor shops before Tier 3 was noticeable, particularly in Harlow and the Thames estuary towns.

On the other hand some Sheffield suburbs (particularly those with households of multiple occupation like Fir Vale) had very high Covid rates last Spring.

Its around this time every day that i start to get twitchy about the figures coming out, I just want an end to all the suffering and dearly want the Government to be doing the right things and turn this corner.

I gave them pelters over the handling of Covid, I have also given them praise about the vaccination process.
I am now hoping they can get the vaccinations back on track.

Sadly every day I seem to get disappointed.

I have zero sympathy for these people if they become ill, it's the law abiding mask wearers that can suffer from their actions which really boils my piss. It's a bit like a car overtaking on a blind bend and crashing in to an oncoming vehicle, not concerned for the bellend of a driver but there's an innocent third party who's going to suffer. I just don't understand why anyone can buy a badge off Amazon that says "I am exempt from wearing a mask". They should have to provide proof of medication or can those be bought off Amazon as well? Wankers.

If you are legitimately exempt, you should be able to jump the queue for home delivery

There’s nothing wrong with being cautious, but it seems like there’s a constant urge amongst people and the media to actively seek out negative/worst case scenarios without actually knowing enough about the situation to possibly know.

Could, might, may etc.

Yes be cautious but wait until there’s actual reliable information to assess what’s going on.

Until this study is published it's not worth paying attention to.

There have been hundreds of claims made through studies during this pandemic that have made headlines until they were peer reviewed and dismissed.

Also, this is not just a UK thing, we were the first to go to 12 weeks, but now loads of countries are doing it, and the World Health Organisation signed off on it.

They haven’t. They agreed with to up to six weeks and only in exceptional circumstances. Reason being there’s some data for up to six weeks, nothing post that.
