Messi’s contract at Barca revealed

His total contract over 4 years was £500m, with all fixed and variable elements. That's £125m a year for wages, bonuses etc.Knock off the one-offs such as signing-on fee and loyalty bonus, which is probably £120m that puts his wages at double that £850k if my sums are right. But a lot of that would be commercially related.

When we first put an offer on the table to his father in 2013, I believe the wages were £250k a week and we would have covered those with 3 new commercial contracts, each of £5m pa.

People need to forget about the financial side of any deal. It's irrelevant in many ways as he's a unique proposition.

i think that figure of £250.000 back then is wrong or maybe basic pay even if he does not play ?

the messi deal to manchester city last summer was reported at £1million pound a week. even the media was saying the first million pound a week player in football ? the deal touted was 3 years at manchester city and 2 years at new york city and the cost would have been £500million to the city group ??

crazy to think a 33 year old can demand such a deal without any guarantees of playing every week and winning titles and silverware ? city would be best to leave it it alone and walk away from it. even pep said messi should stay at barcelona

looking at the deal reported in the summer messi at 27 or 28 would be about right for what we was touted we was willing to pay ? messi at 33 well come on ? would you pay top dollar for a racehorse that has finished racing ? it would be like buying red rum 4 or 5 years after he won his last grand national

You keep repeating this avsolute nonsense every few weeks in the Messi thread and repeating it doesn't make it less bollocks.

The sad part is you've had it explained to you so many times that its not ignorance, its just arguing in bad faith.
And you keep repeating the same about wanting him to come.

It's all about opinions, the Messi we could sign at the end of the season is not the player he once was.

We clearly have a very happy camp, a very good dressing room, I don't want someone who could upset that.

Messi, yes even 7 times balon d'or winner could upset the apple cart, especially if he is on 500k a week, however it is funded. If I was KDB I would want parity.

It’s not one or the other though is it?
Just think of this pitch...

“Hey Mr Haaland, we know several clubs are interested and you might even want to stay where you are, but how do you feel about playing alongside Lionel Messi next season?”

Bringing in Messi means better sponsorship and a greater attraction for potential other new signings. Yes he has peaked but his peak is so high that on his way down he’s still easily one of the best players in the world and one of the biggest draws.
Hey Mr Haaland, how would you like to play for Manchester City Football club, have the chance to win every title going, become very wealthy and have the greatest coach in world football helping you every day of the week.

We are Manchester City FC, not Messi FC.

If little Alf is only attracted to us because of signing Messi, he is not the player for us.

Manchester City FC is a big player, the best players want to play for us, end of story, we don't have to have Messi as a carrot on a stick.

Seems like it’s between 200 and 300 judging by twitter. Can’t believe how anyone wouldn’t want Messi at City. Best player of all time and he would end up paying his own wages
So why don’t they keep him? Or shove another 50m up his arse if he’s feeling hard done by?

It’s a no brainer on your numbers and he’s obviously the only reason Barcelona aren’t queuing up at Cash Converters.

I can't wait for Jim White to answer his phone mid show tomorrow and pretend he's just received some breaking news on Messi

I agree with both sides of this debate and simultaneously would like and would not like Messi to sign for us. Looks like I’m not going to be disappointed!

I do wonder, if Messi did sign for us, would the naysayers be in the announcement thread denouncing the signing?

My understanding was that was the basic wage that City would have to pay, along with a fee in the region of £180m.
Sterling is on about £10m a year isn’t he?

I don’t think nor want us to move for Messi, I’ve changed my mind after seeing that. Let the Parisians spend a fortune on him.

I don’t think any player would try and use Messi’s arrival as an opportunity to ask for more money because of his wages.

If this contract is really true then Barcelona have been mugged irrespective of what he brings to the table.
What I don't what City to do is offer him something like this deal when he is closing in to the end of his career. If this was any other player I would be 100% sure the top brass at City would say no to such filthy money. But the Barca connection may make them a little biased towards Messi. I am saying this just because of the CFG deals and offers that we were talking about last summer when he was suppose to come to City.
The wonders he will do to our global brand would be unprecedented and this is not even a question. But whether that would be enough in financial rewards of what we may offer him, only a well versed accountant would be sure of such numbers. So I will leave this in the hands of our extremely competent owners.
And I don't know about others but I will pay 5 times the money in order to watch play in sky blue at the Etihad!

Don’t your read the thread? It will cost us next to nothing and probably make us some money having Messi!

Do people think we are run like some corner shop?!

A 20 yr old Little Afie Haaland banging in goals for fun would attract far more attention, sponsorship and new fans than a 34 yr old fading superstar.

Messi was the finest player of his generation and arguably the greatest ever, but his time as a cash cow has peaked.

Find the new superstar (s), we may well have one on the books already.
Haaland is a must. Perfect long-term replacement for Kun and will cost a lot less than Messi.
