1) Principal: He has openly flirted more than once, inviting interest, only to turn around and stay put.Why wouldn’t you want the greatest footballer of all time not to come to City. What is your reasoning?
2) Squad harmony: Potential for harm here. I accept we don’t know for sure but signing someone who will earn millions of pounds a year more than anyone else, and be treated as a superstar by all and sundry is a dangerous chance to take. If he was 26 and signed a 7 year contract it might be worth it but he isn’t and won’t.
3) Age: He is too old now. He is still an excellent footballer but I don’t want to be paying someone 5/600k a week at 34 when we could use this money on someone a lot younger (Harland?)
4) Decline: He is not superhuman and no matter who you are as you get to 34, and onwards to 35 you cannot be the same player you were at 27.
5) Priority: An aging superstar should not be a priority. We need TWO WC forwards to replace Sergio soon and work with Jesus. Tying up tens (or hundreds) of millions on an aging player isn’t a smart use of resources. We still have to work within external financial rules wether we like it or not. There is talk of a ‘separate stash’ for Messi. Doesn’t matter. Money is money and must be accounted for.
One of this clubs key strengths over the years has been a sense of togetherness. It saw us through tight title races 3 times, the UEFA corruption, changes of manager, and A constant slating from the media. Putting a player who now has history at agitating when things don’t go exactly his way into this club risks that togetherness. And lastly, and IMO most importantly:
5) Nobody is biggger than City: Messi clearly believes he is bigger than Barcelona, I cannot countenance allowing anybody to act in a way that shows they think they are bigger than City. Even one of the top 4 or 5 players of the last few years.
That said, the above is only my opinion. I trust the club to do the right thing and make it work Whatever they decide to do. They have got far more correct than not over the last 12 years or so And if they sign him this summer you and I can rest assured they will have a way to make it work.
One positive in favour of signing him is the sheer amount of piss it would boil in the UK. Can you imagine the scousers and filth fans if they had to watch Messi in sky blue? It’d be glorious I admit.
