Reasons to sign him:

1. Messi on the decline is miles better than David Silva was at his peak.
2. One of the best finishers in the history of football. With the chances we create and miss this would be of great need.
3. Brilliant left footed set pieces.
4. His name will help attract big name signings to the club. “Hey Haaland, how do you feel about playing with Messi next season?”
5. All our sponsorships will increase as a result of his association with our football club.
6. Our fan base would increase worldwide as a result of his association with our football club.
7. Fans put off attending games due to the virus getting them out of the habit will instead be hot wheeling back to the stadium.
8. He’s still one of the best players in the world even at 33.
9. Teams will be shit scared of us and we’ll be the biggest draw in football for opposition fans.
10. Our standing as a club will be bigger than ever and more people than ever will want to come to our games.
i agree with most of those points but I don’t agree that Messi now is miles better than David Silva at his peak. In fact I would have Silva in his peak over Messi in decline every day of the week.

That's because you're a good, loyal Manchester City fan who's loved watching Silva for 10 years.

Messi on the decline got 31 goals and 27 assists last season playing mostly as an attacking midfielder, and if Silva had the ability to do half of that at his peak, he would have done. And before someone chimes in with Silva's game not being about goals and assists, Messi has everything else as well as the goals and assists.

We will always love Merlin for what he did here, and he came at a time when a lot of players weren't interested. He helped build the club into the global superpower it is now, it's not a slight against him to acknowledge he's simply never been close to the level of the greatest player of all time.

Exactly.

Would I swap 10 years of David or Sergio for 10 years of Messi? Logic says yes, but sentiment says no.

Messi is the best player to ever live, but I love David and Sergio. So the answer to that question depends on whether I have my City hat on.

When you come at the king, you better not miss.

I believe our board's aim to be still true and good.

The publishing of Messi's financial package clearly had multifaceted objectives.

To bracket Messi and also justify to the Barcelona supporters why he must be allowed to leave, whilst also deligitimising his next destination, posing questions of that club's funding ability to justify it.

More so City than PSG, due to recent relations.

New York can't do this without City, City can't do it without New York, certainly if he intends to play at the top level for another couple of years.

Paris has its obvious attractions from a lifestyle perspective, as does the fact he can get a direct flight from CDG to Buenos Aires, something Sergio already has to avail himself of, each time he wants to go home.

All the same, City need to emerge from the post-Covid era with the best possible chance to ramp up revenues, while also remaining competitive for Pep during his own three years left at the club.

Perhaps Messi is a Hail Mary for many different reasons inside City, certainly if it also means Pep winning the Champions League during his remaining tenure here?

I'd say all roads still lead to Messi unless he decides otherwise.

We could only afford him last summer if he walked away for free and he wasn't talking to Paris then, so why should things be any different.

Our unique selling point wasn't and isn't purely about money, he can get that and more from other places.

It's about environment, enjoying it, perhaps with people he trusts and have always respected his own wishes.

If he wanted money I'd expect he'd go out to the Middle East
Cant help but feel the pandemic and its effects financially on the game will put a stop to us doing a deal although i hope im very wrong.

He is still the greatest player in world football and he would take us to a whole new level on and off the pitch.

Pandemic has affected everyone though. If anything we're in a good position because the UK will be fully vaccinated 3 months before most of the rest of Europe.

Sid Lowe and Phil Kitromilides discussed the El Mundo Messi exclusive on their podcast and it wasn't just the front page, there were 7 separate, long articles in the paper about the contract and Messi and they apparently went way beyond "How crazy is it that one man can be paid so much" type stuff - they actually pinned the blame for all of Barcelona's financial problems on Messi, really tried to portray him as the bad guy at the heart of the Barca decline.

They also said that it went so far that it was incredibly transparent and there's been a pretty big backlash against it.

I just finished reading The Panama Papers and there’s an entire chapter devoted to Messi and Jorge’s tax dodging. They use a very, very fishy firm to squirrel money away.
If we are going to do this, they better be squeaky clean because they have no idea how the gutter press will come after them out of a hatred for us.

This very very fishy firm, it isn't called Uefa by any chance is it?

I'm sorry but Messi on the decline is not 'miles better' than David Silva in his peak and to even mutter the words is a complete and utter nonsense. You can whip out stats like the above all you want but you forget the differences in the leagues and the teams therein. No one makes those kinds of numbers in the Premier League because its not got teams like Getafe et al who get pumped 10-0 by both the big 2 home and away every year. That's not to take away from Messi or his achievements, he is the best player ever but to suggest what you said in your first sentence is utterly preposterous and evidences how little you understand the game of football.

Hopefully we get to find out. I suspect you might change your mind but it's a matter of opinions. Would love to see how the PL attempts to handle him.

You couldn’t be more wrong. Your “analysis” is beyond lazy and it’s obviously clear that you don’t even watch players like Messi on a regular basis. A proper ‘clueless pissed up old bloke down the pub’ standard of post tbh.

Ah look, it's the guy who's swallowed Sky's "Premier league is the best in the world" marketing.
