The AZ vaccine might not stop mild infection of the SAF variant but it should stop practically all hospitalisations and deaths, according to the Beeb just now.

Oxford Uni are already working on amendments and it could be weeks away to stop the SAF variant.

It’s very unlikely any variants will change so much the vaccines won’t stop serious illness.

The Telegraph have just put up an article that details how after the over 50s have been vaccinated then the Government is considering in the work place vaccinations. The main thrust of it is that people working at home potentially will be further back in the queue. This makes sense to me.

Have to see what the study says when its released Monday, but the leaks show an average age of 31 years old I don’t really understand who’s run it either

It will only get worst in March & April . Dickheads at my works say they don’t mind staying in Jan & Feb because the weather is shit but they are not stopping in March . 2 of the lads who are of this opinion also won’t take the vaccine. 56 & 48yr olds
They are old enough to know better

The charge to end restrictions was started in ernest by the (rw) media this week. Generally the same lot that were loudly declaring there was no second wave back in October. It was the same last year - essentially undermine the restrictions and incite the public to ignore them and therefore force the Govt to relax things. A lot of (quite right) calls for an inquiry into the Govt handling of covid, but some of the media outlets that have been poisoning the well and only just stopping short of outright covid denial should be looked at too.

I think we should stay in lockdown until we really get it under control this time, no fucker is going to do another one let’s just carry on then hopefully some sort of normality when the better weather comes
As I’ve said before, assuming everything improves at the same rates - deaths, cases, vaccinations - then I reckon people can and will cope in general until Easter. After that they will have to open things up, otherwise it’ll be carnage.

I agree on Easter mate. We can be in a far better place by then if people comply with the rules. Over 60s will have had the (first) jab and hopefully better weather will have contributed to cutting the number of cases and the number of people being hospitalised to manageable levels.

They will change their minds, when they realise that the things they take for granted in the world will not be open to them unless they are vaccinated

Hopefully this is the case but people can be stubborn.

I am nervous this morning reading the headlines about variants. What is going to happen when 75% of the UK is vaccinated and we lift the lockdown. Are the semi-resistant strains going to continue circulating? We can't tell now. The vaccines are going to provide selective pressure for mutation, and we don't know what is going to happen, or I don't. Experts should be able to tell what mutations are likely to prosper and how dangerous they could be. They can model 3D structures with computer programs and model how effective certain mutations will be.

I think the comments above about booster jabs are correct but I don't want this dragging on through the year. I don't know how the virus is going to evolve as apply the vaccine too it. In many ways I wont be too bothered if vaccines end up just preventing the worst of the illness if I know that in 6 months there'll be a more effective solution.

As soon as the vaccine is available, I will take it. Anyone who doesn't is a fool (unless they have a good medical reason for not doing so). In reality when we go back to the normal world, we're going to catch colds and flus as we always do. I don't care too much if Covid-19SA is one of them providing it's just like the rest. The reality is we live with microrganisms. All that's important is that our immune system can beat off infection.

In the meantime I am in the slowly does it camp because I think we need to reduce the virus in circulation as much as possible to minimise mutations. In reality I don't know how real this threat is. We have barely started vaccinantion yet. It maybe at the end of the process there will still be something left which causes us a problem but the scale of it I don't know. I prefer to be cautious about stuff I don't understand.

It's a bit of a concern if there is still a lot of the virus in circulation when we are (nearly) all vaccinated then surely the evolutionary pressure on the virus will be to navigate the vaccine(s) just as we are seeing more contagious strains now?

Does the "SAF" variant give you a red nose?

Andrew marr's proper pissing me off this morning. Has guest on, "what about his new veriant then, will spread like wild fire, doom and gloom"
guest "ye, no virologist I know is that worried, the vaccine will work"
next guest on, Marr "blah, blah, doom and gloom"
Guest " ye, as my colleague just said, we're not worried"
next guest, marr"what about this new variant..."
Guest" ye as you've previously been told, no need to worry"
Fuck me talk about pushing a negative slant to try and get a story. Wanker.
