An encouraging but cautious Government briefing today.

My concern is around the persistent number of new hospital admissions; 1,600 today says the PM. I know this largely reflects the higher case numbers from late January, but it still seems a high infection to hospitalisation rate.

Because you posted a video touting a an un-peer reviewed study which appears to have a number of issues?
But the trial in Barcelona is definately randomised. I read the paper on the links section on Dr John' Campbell's video. The full paper being made available yesterday rather than just the summary.

Once again the North West is the highest area despite the fall.

Though it is the lowest number since pre Christmas just.

Down 286 to 1527.

Greater Manchester falls 150 to 654 so that is a fall of 1.5% on yesterdays big rise.

But at 42.8% of the NW total is still higher than any day this year apart from yesterday.

A month ago GM was 28% of the NW total.

Other regions today:-

Yorkshire falls 233 to go below 1000 at 950

East also below 1000 at 936

As is East Midlands at 884 - North East at 497 and South West at 581

West Midlands at 1037 and London at 1064 and South East at 1048 all just above but well below NW.

Just changed the channel after that plonker from Sky asked another inane and pointless question.

yes me too at exactly the same time. Good positive briefing. A measured release and we have got this. That stupid person asking can you guarantee no more lockdowns? What answer did she expect?

Let me guess the questions-

“when can we go on holiday?”

“can we book a wedding now?”

or some other tedious shite that will never get an answer because it doesn’t deserve one.

Only in your head.
They reviewed 4 studies back in August/September they threw out 3 studies that indicated Vit D had a major effect and approved the one that showed that Vit D had a minor effect. The reasons for throwing out 3 studies were spurious as the accepting the other study.
But hey that's NICE for you.

I just worked out the hospital data as of today.

There were the usual small rises in England over weekend - all of 36 up on Saturday's data.

So still well below the England first wave peak.

And the UK data is also below the first wave peak at 20, 952 not the 23, 341 from 4 days ago used by both the BBC News 3 times today and the briefing to tell us just now that there are still more people in hospital than the first wave.

When there was not on Saturday and still is not today despite the small rise.

I have no idea why they use out of date information.

How about they do the same for lottery numbers. You get to announce them days after they happen so you can then decide to buy your own ticket first after the draw has been made but before anyone knows it without doing a few sums.

England by the way only did 187, 246 first dose vaccinations yesterday.

Nearly a quarter of a million fewer than the previous two days.

The lowest numbers in a month.

The second doses were way down too. Just 837 - only 6 more than Wales and one fifth the total on several recent days. This is a big drop off from the 4636 reported Friday.

I assume the start of the supply fall off Nicola Sturgeon warned us about a week ago.

That scientist on the BBC now was not very reassuring on the the lower efficacy of the AZ vaccine v the Pfizer one saying in effect by autumn we will have more of the better ones to give people greater protection then - but oh do get it if you are offered it.

And in the next six months you do what?

I can see this turning into a my jab was better than yours internet jealousy war if someone does not speak up for AZ a bit more forcefully. I understand the arguments as we have aired them on here. But how many are going to be deterred by comments like his to even choose to wait for the other one?

For balance the BBC should have had someone saying more positive things on AZ.

It has become the same as pre and post match punditry, switch it on for the briefing and off as soon as it has finished.
Unless they have a little £5 sweep, for who can ask the worst question.

Commented yesterday regarding an outbreak at a prison in Kilmarnock, just been announced now that there's 257 cases within - 27 of whom are staff members and 230 inmates. That's quite an outbreak, and can see why East Ayrshire is currently posting the highest rate of infections in Scotland. Also won't help the fluctuating numbers we're getting in Scotland currently.

think the gratitude will outweigh jealousy for the most at risk groups.

Happily they are the least likely to be on social media.

I just wish that instead of implying Pfizer protects better they made more of the ways in which AZ outperforms Pfizer. Which imo is more important for the control of the pandemic.

Must admit, I find my crossing my fingers that my parents are offered the Pfizer one when its their turn. I can't be alone in sharing similar views re their own families.

Tedious for you and many others I'm sure, but mine and hundreds of thousands of other jobs rest on the answer to that first question.

The company I work for, a small independent agency in the Midlands with 15 branches, was valued at £4m in January 2020.

It's now worth nothing.

And this isn't a business that was struggling or stagnated; the company had almost doubled in size the last 5 years due to their success.

So yes, tedious for you, tedious for most, but for some it's our careers and livelihoods.

I'm glad no answers were given (if it was asked) because in reality it's impossible to answer accurately at the moment, but don't discredit an entire industry by saying we don't deserve an answer.

When the picture becomes clearer, we absolutely do need and deserve an answer.

Which are the ways that AZ outperforms Pfizer? If it's reducing transmission, that's great, but you can't really blame people for still feeling less safe individually.
