A "source" at the club no denying any approaches have been made:

They had to put this out as a way to deny the figures that started circulating this (last?) week. When it gets too specific, it’s a problem. But you can bet the farm this is bullshit. I remember a month or so ago when Sam Lee said in the podcast that he heard from Messi’s camp, after a tv host said she had heard we had “moved on from him”, that we were very much still in touch.

I find it hard to believe that no approaches from City have been made to sign Messi.
Last summer when Messi was desperately trying to end his contract with Barcelona where was he expecting to go? He must have had offers.
Only City & PSG could realistically afford him.
If last summer he was lined up to go to PSG then I'm sure they would have been more vocal in the press.

thats what I thought as well - all smoke and mirrors

I think the latest reports that no contact has been made actually suggest we are closer to getting him than PSG.

In my humble opinion PSG are having to chase him in the press, get players to put pressure on him. That’s what a club who know they have a lot of work to do in getting a player would do.

City have reminded silent. No panic, no need to go chasing him.

It’s a little bit about keeping the narrative in place. If Messi leaves Barca it will be because he made his mind up to leave and then at that point city came in with a firm offer.
There’s no “city offered him more money than Barca” or “city chased him all summer”

It’s just a case he left a currently failing sporting project as he was unhappy. He didn’t go for the money, it was for sporting reasons.

And then city approached a free agent.

I just get the impression city are being respectful to Messi and Barca knowing they are about to take the greatest player of all time on a free. Being loud and brash about it is only going to upset the Apple cart.

I think the old Barca guys at our club just don’t want to be made out to be bad guys if Messi turns around at the end of the season and says ‘I’m leaving and want to join Manchester City’ since any perceived early discussions on our part might not go down well with their fans even if Messi is actually legally able to talk to us right now.

The reports earlier this week were about how our new offer was X million euros less than what we were offering in the summer. The Simon Stone tweet is about how there was no contact in the summer or now — it’s so transparently, obviously designed to deny just that report and appease the Messi camp (that hates any talk of figures in the public sphere, just think of that newspaper cover about how much he earned through his contract at Barcelona). I agree with the poster above who says this means we’re definitely in for him, as if we didn’t already know

So what's Messi's 'official' stance in all this?

He's waiting for the results of the election next month before he decides on his future?

I can see no discernible benefit for City to publicly admit they are interested in signing him.

City have gone nuclear to the pack today.

As far as they are concerned, the latest story is just a rip off from the transfer podcast and has no credibility.

They are obviously gilding the lily to protect all parties concerned.

I'm sure Messi's guy last summer revealed Pep had a two hour chat with the player to discuss how he would fit in?

There is a wider public thirst to establish Messi's future and, much like it was with Pep coming to us, I think the player and City will have to keep fencing on this until the cat is let out of the bag?

Possibly City want to aid Laporte in his election campaign and can still hold off for now or until PSG deliver the final death blow?

Is that a trick question? If he had convinced them to let him cancel his contract (as he believed he was able to at the time), who do you think wouldn't have spoken to him?

I cant see any presedential candidate being the one to be seen as the person who loses/lost messi......however the reality I think (unless there is a drastic change in Barca's fortunes) is that no matter who wins that election they will lose him.....I think it was Laporte this week that said its not about money its about the sporting project that they can offer Messi....and watching them the other night they are so far off being a strong team capable of winning things again it would take huge investment and time to ge them back to anywhere near challenging for honours..time Messi doesnt have considering ALL he has given them in the past.

What City are saying has to be true. To kill the fake Sun story dead in it's tracks. The Sun and it's sh*te journalist discredited. Job done.

City may have said they haven't made a offer, but they haven't ever said they aren't interested in signing Messi.

City will wait until Messi has left Barca. Once he has, the offer will be made to Messi and his Father. Both of them know City are interested.

Why do city want to aid Laporta? Is he still close to tixi and ferran? Would that mean they could have Barca as more of an ally in the future?
What do we have to gain from a Laporta win?

If Barca go out in the Champions League which in all likelihood that will happen after the pasting they got from Mbappe & PSG and Barca can't win the league would that speed up Messi announcing anything publicly? He'd just be treading water there until the season ends realistically.

Surely our fans and the media know they won't get anything out of us in regards to talking to Messi, our interest in Messi or anything. We close up shop to the media better then anyone in regards to transfers etc so the media will have more chance getting blood from a stone then any info from us.
