Is anyone really surprised that he is having a crisis of confidence in front of goal?

You take a 20 year old kid and give him irregular game time behind the best striker we've ever had. You force a constant comparison between the two from the moment he arrives. Then you create a situation where every single game Aguero is out there is a ton of pressure to prove you are good enough. You must score. No one gives a shit about all the other work you do, you must score.

Then as soon as you dont score in 1 game people start questioning you. If its 2 games? Twice as much chat. Come back with no preseason and lead the line. Play injured because Aguero is out. Why arent you scoring? Play when the team is going through its worst period in 3 years and not scoring any goals. No one is cresting any chances but you're still getting shit for not starting.

Oh and by the way we are going to buy a 100m striker this summer so you better start delivering. Coronavirus knocks you out for 3 weeks. Now play on the wing for a bit. Now get subbed early because you're the only fit striker. Still not scoring enough. Now Aguero is back, get ready to be benched again.

I think Pep's management of him has been poor, he is clearly a guy who needs an arm around the shoulder and instead Pep ramps up the pressure on him whenever he can.

I think its amazing he is still playing so well outside the box and probably testament to just how much pressure he can take that he recovered from a bad miss yesterday.

Sooner rather than later he will get over it. This is not a skill he lacks, look at the finish 12 months ago vs. Real and its a much harder chance from the same kind of winning the ball back high up and he hit it straight away. It's a mental block.
Agreed with this post all the way down to the bit about Pep and then again afterwards. I think the pressure put on him has been by the fans, not Pep. To Pep he is (nearly) the perfect forward for his system, his pressing, his intelligence, his positioning, the way he pulls defenders around to create the space for the rest of the forwards, all amazing.

The negative to his detractors, is his finishing is not that of an Aguero (whose is) but he scores a lot of goals. "He should score more" how many more are needed when he is a part of us willing 19 straight games?

But Pep doesnt need a single person to score all the goals, he sets up so we have 4 or 5 players who share the responsibility between them.

I would say we need an alternative striker, not to replace Jesus but to complement him. We dont play with a fixed starting 11, just a spine of 5 or 6 players. A strike force of Jesus and a more pure goalscorer would be great.

Jesus is 2.5 years younger than Sterling - 2.5 years ago Sterling was probably our best player!

absolutely remarkable how no one here wants to hear the cold hard fact that Gabriel Jesus has one of the worst conversion rates of any striker in the PL this season. Just impossible to reconcile with that simple truth.
open your fucking eyes, he rarely plays as the main striker , he plays across the front line and deeper, its more than conversation rates, someone said that with all the stats some people think they know it all, your one of them, i use my eyes to see what a player does for the team, not some fucking stats .he pulls defenders all over the place so people like bernie, gundogan, foden can get space in the box, use your fucking eyes.

Pep has said he is the best striker in the world at doing what he does, but he has also had press conferences where he ignores journalists looking for praise of Jesus and flatly says he has to score more goals, and I dont think its ever lead to him scoring.

And he does things like make Jesus work like a dog all game vs Everton and then when the game opens up and chances start coming at the end, shifts him to the wing so Mahrez got 2 or 3 chances Jesus would have killed for. Wjy not let him get the reward for doing the hard yards when the game was tight?

We have a 20 goal a season striker who adds an insane amount to our overall game and he has one overcomeable obstacle to being a 30+ goal a season striker who could win us the CL and I dont really see Pep trying to fix that.

Maybe he is in private, but wildly gesticulating whenever he misses even a half chance doesn't seem to be helping a kid who puts so much pressure on himself he was literally hitting himself over the head for missing a chance vs. Everton on his weak foot with an xG of 0.1.

that's such utter bollocks man. Oh he runs around a lot, oh he pulls defenders. Do you fucking think any other striker doesn't do those things as well? have you fucking watched aguero when he came on and how effectively he pulled defenders and contributed to the overall play? probably the best we looked whole match ffs. Open your fucking eyes and stop ignoring the elephant in the room. He absolutely plays as our central striker whether you wanna admit it or not. this apologia is so ridiculous. You wanna claim that he's the greatest striker that has ever strikered? fine, but stop lying to yourself about his absolute dire finishing. You say "open your eyes" yet you completely shutter off yours to his stats. "NOT SOME FUCKING STATS" give me a break.

you wanna have a go at me that's fine but i'll continue saying my truth whether it annoys people here or not

Pep has said a number of times, strikers have to score goals, so the pressure is there. I hope Gabby didn't see Peps reaction when he missed that chance last night. It was hardly confidence building. I love Gabby. Think he has been brilliant since he came but he has to improve his decision making in front of goal. I am sure the lad is the first to put his hand up and agree with that. It seems he is quite similar to Raz, in that the more time they have to think the less likely they are to score.

You are right on about this part. Pep said himself, the team doesn't have a "Messi, CR, Neymar", someone who can "score more than 1 goal per game" (I'm paraphrasing here). I wouldn't Pep is exactly looking for a striker, but he's looking for a pure goalscorer, thus the club's interest in Haaland.

Where can I find player's conversion rates?

But this is for teams. I'll try to look for players', but you can also do the math yourself :)

Cheers, can't find anything for individual players myself, can't be bothered doing the math :)

I think Pep's management of him has been poor, he is clearly a guy who needs an arm around the shoulder and to relax instead Pep ramps up the pressure on him whenever he can.
Unfortunately, I think Pep this season, has decided to ramp the pressure up on everyone. And it worked for the most part, with regards to the rest of the team. We immediately started playing better when Pep declared no one's position is safe.

I agree Jesus doesn't do well with pressure. On the other hand, Aguero's return (and if starting) might actually ease the pressure on him, since he won't be on the spotlight that much.

If he plays them together it might solve everything. Let Gabby feel like the axe isn't hovering over his head, let someone distract defenders, and let him relax into scoring.

It is the nature of football forums, every player performance thread has a vocal few who think that player is shit. It is cyclical, and a little sad.
If Sterling, Mahrez, Bernardo, Gundogan , Zinchenko Jesus, et al were as bad as the detractors say, I doubt we would be 28 undefeated.
Confirmation bias is a powerful tool.
Does anyone really believe the genius of pep would be offering new contracts yo these players if they didn't have the required potential.
They can all improve , but they are not too scabby in the meanwhile.

It was a bad miss and he certainly should have done better he needs to balance that selfless acts of him and try to be more selfish at times he tried to wait for Bernardo or someone else in the box where he should shoot and bury that chance he is not beeing clinical lately but his all around game improved a lot and personally i don't see in the world a foward doing what he does with the ball and without the ball, his movement, lay offs, pressing and passing are world class but as any other striker we expect him to score goals and he is failing at this departament.. but despite his negative goal record in this recent months I was checking some of his UCL stats and it suprises me how underrated he is with the goal that he scored he has now 16 in 27 matches he turned into the second quickest brazilian player to reach 16 goals in the UCL only Neymar has done better by scoring 16 in 26 he also surpassed Firmino's goal tally (15) and equal Romário's record (16), and the most mind blowing stat is that since the 18/19 season only Lewandowski (27), Messi (19), Haaland (18), Ronaldo (14) , Mbáppe (14), Neymar (14), Benzema (13), Salah (13), have scored more goals than him in the UCL, this guys are the Elite of today's football ! he is hella of frustating to time to time but his quality is undeniable this lad has enough quality to play for us and he has a future at this club we just need to know where , Striker ? Winger ? Second Striker ?

Appreciate his work rate but he's simply not a striker and Pep's not happy with the one on one miss
No one was happy with that. But I like to think Pep was happy with his overall contribution. I was.
And Pep was probably not happy with the non-contribution from Sterling. I wasn’t.

hes the greatest striker to have ever strikered, didnt say that, even if i thought it i certainly wouldnt of said strikered , who the fuck says that, and no he doesn't play as the main striker ,he might be the "main striker" he plays all over the place, he doesnt just play in the "striker" position, if that was all his job was ,i would say, he doesnt score enough, as i said, open your fucking eyes, stop looking at the stats and actually watch how he plays.oh and your coming across as a youngster have a tantrum ,lol

I thought he was brilliant last night, other than that missed opportunity.

Some of his linkup play and ball retention is great to watch. He'll be absolutely insane whenever he hits that point in his career where he just has constant self confidence.

I must admit that is what i thought I watched

Couldn't have said it better myself. Both him and Sterling need to convert more of the guilt edge chances this team creates for them. Goals win games, that's all there is to it really.
