Aguero contract situation

Not quite, I don't think. They are (all) just making a story out of a comment by Paul Ince that Utd would be right to be interested in Sergio if he is available. Yeah no shit.

The Sun may well have embellished, haven't actually bothered reading the full thing, but I don't see it as coming out of Sergio's agent or camp at all, personally.
Ah, thanks for the clarification.

I think if it were me in charge, I'd tell Sergio to stick around for a year as back up to Haaland. You'll still play 20+ games which will be a good way to ease back into things and prepare for the 2022 World Cup. Play with Messi like you always wanted, maybe crack the formation for Argentina.

He'd get a chance to finish a bunch of records - most PL goals for 1 club, first foreign player to score 200 top flight goals maybe, top scorer in the Manchester derby maybe. Could win a 6th Premier League title or a 1st (or 2nd) Champions League. End on a high with fans in the stadium.

He'd also probably get better offers after a season when he's played 20 games and scored 15 goals than he would now. MLS, Argentina or back to Spain if he wants.

As romantic as that sounds, I can't see it, for either party.

For us, even if he reduced his wages a good bit, or went to a games played based wage, he would still take up a foreign spot, and would attract that 'club legend is on the bench and you are not using him' attention. Can't see us going into a season with 3 strikers on the books, haven't done that in years.

And for him, as good as that sounds, it is a one year contract on potentially much lower wages. If a top level club offers him 2 or even 3 years at slightly lower wages than he's on, thats a better deal. And would he really want to be a backup guy. And would any of us truly like seing that?

Who knows, may well come to that, and it would be nice. But I do doubt it, I think he is off in a few months.

Edit. He has played 8 games this whole season. And that is without a goal scoring striker such as haaland or whoever we would sign. I know it is through injury and covid, but i don't see him playing 20 games This year, let alone next.

In terms of the foreign players issue, we currently have two spots available in our squad. Fernandinho is probably off and I imagine we'll try to secure a loan for Mendy somewhere. That would leave us with four foreign spots available so Aguero staying isn't an issue on that front.

I don't think the number of strikers is a problem either because Jesus has shown his versatility by being able to play on the wing which is arguably a position that better utilises his strengths.

Personally, I hope he stays because he's within touching distance of a few more records and I want him to get the send-off he deserves. As you say though, a lot depends on whether Segio is willing to take a wage cut and if he's happy to have a reduced role in the team. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

We've none. We've 16 foreigners and 5 association developed. For anyone to come in, somebody has to leave.
I counted 15: Ederson, Cancelo, Dias, Laporte, Mendy, Zinchenko, Fernandinho, Rodri, Gundogan, De Bruyne, Bernardo, Mahrez, Torres, Aguero, Jesus.

Also, I thought you were allowed 17 non-HG players.

We currently don't have any spots available. We do, if we assume Carson doesn't exist. Butnhe does, and is in the CL squad.

Even so, if we clear 4 spots next season, using up one to have a backup backup striker, I kind of don't see it myself.

You are forgetting Steffen. And as we have 5 homegrown, one takes up a foreign slot. In the CL, but that is the measure.

Loaning mendy and losing fernandinho counts for nothing unless they are replaced by academy players (not even home grown helps), which I can't see.

Anyway, probably moot, as I doubt he will stay, as nice as it would be.

He's been a fantastic player for us & will always be a legend at our club but i'm completely relaxed about the situation if he leaves.
Injuries and age have had an impact on him & whilst i still think he's got a part to play for the rest of this season, i'm not sure that'll be the case for next season.
Also means having our highest wage earner sat on the bench & as much as I would love him to stay can't see it happening.

You're missing Steffen.
You're allowed 21 non club trained players of which no more than 17 must be foreign. We have 16 foreign players and 5 domestic.

Oh right, no idea why but for some reason I thought Steffen counted as HG.

Sentimentality apart, I think we should offer him a 5 year contract extension and make sure he’s on twice as much as De Bruyne.

I think if we get to the end of the international break, with no change or mention of it, he is most likely gone at the end of the season.

I just don't see how the club and he would leave it that late and so close to June to table a deal.

Just don’t want him to go to premiership club, especially the rags and come back to bite us....he is a legend let’s end it the right way for him and us. ,let’s not have another yaya

Isn't it 4 HG + 4 Club trained? So Ake, Stones, Walker and Sterling take the HG spots. While Foden is in a separate category as club trained. Rather than the HG category (using CL squad rules).

We also have 16 foreign spots taken (including Steffen). While the max is 17. So we currently have space for 1 more Foreign player. 3 if Aguero and Ferna leave (as currently expected). 4 if we can manage to sell Mendy.

Correct me if i'm wrong.

Very much so. Carson though takes the 17th spot, as we cant have 5 HG.

But isn't that spot pretty malleable? For example, if we had gotten Messi last summer. We would have made space for him by just not registering Carson in the CL squad. And using a club trained keeper as our 3rd keeper.

In other words, registering Carson isn't that important and won't hinder our squad (transfer) planning.
