A user on the Barca forum was saying how Messi is not communicating with Laporta the trails gone cold, dont know if thats something to do with Tolmie's post.

It's rare that players go into the last year of their contracts for many reasons, but mainly because the risk of injury is always present and a bad one puts a serious dent in what happens next. I'm currently looking at Messi dragging them into a title race and wondering to myself how he must be feeling. The new president is in, the guy who loves Leo 'like a son'. Yet there isn't even a real financial plan for the club's future, let alone Messi's.

Personally I think the longer it stays silent at the Barcelona end with regards a new deal, the more likely it is that it's just not happening. If there's a willingness on Leo's part to sign a new deal then he will have communicated that to Laporta. If there's a way to do that deal, Laporta will do it before anything else.

Finally, and something else which has been on my mind. What if Laporta, for all his words, simply doesn't want Messi to stay because of the financial liability. He can't sell that to anyone really, he rode in on the election promise that if he's elected Messi stays. What he has to do is stay silent and put his head down until the season ends and hope that no one notices the fact no offer has been forthcoming. Then lowball them with something insulting.

Of course all this could be confirmation bias because I want him. :)

Another user from the forum posted something that goes along the lines of what you said and what tolmie said about Eric Garcia, Barcelona are really close to Bankruptcy Laporta didnt really realize how bad it was the debt. They are all talking about how they need to do a massive sale this summer to afford Messi's wages. By sale meaning nearly half the squad Griezmann is the big one on 45mil a year and 880k a week wages

Antoine Griezmann€ 45,834,000€ 881,423CF28

They're not going to be able to get in any fees for those players either, in fact in Griezmann's case (30 years old and 3 seasons left on his contract) they're going to have to pay to get rid of him, nobody is going to fork out €137m for him now (the remaining wages on his deal).

Wow that must be the only reason why he didn't sign for the rags when the media said he was nailed on.

Said it recently on another thread, anyone who thinks Madrid and Barca are a big draw for any other reason than money nowadays should look at what they're paying their players and not just the stars.
