The Detectives: Fighting Organised Crime

Interesting that a fair amount of the CCTV that collared them was from the Gym where they hung out. I have always been a supporter of CCTV, this reminded me why.
That Gym is just a five minute walk from where I live and me any a mate of mine were talking about joining it when they open up again,.

That's not going to be happening now.

I'm not sure what you can change it to? They can't torture someone to speak. I guess you could adjust the law to be deemed guilty if you don't cooperate in interviews but I'm sure civil liberty groups would be all over it.

The others got away lightly on sentencing I thought. They all knew he was going to murder him so should all have got life. For the shooter it should have been a whole life tariff. He shouldn't even have the chance of coming out ever. It's not like he fired the gun to frighten him and killing him was a mistake, it was a cold blooded execution. Still his life is as good as finished. Go inside as a young ripped 28 year old in his prime, come out at the very least a 64 year old, with all the disadvantages that brings. No collateral, no wife and kids/grandkids, health issues, living on the basic state pension which he probably can't draw until he's 75 by the time he gets out. Nobody will know, fear or respect him, in fact he will probably be a target himself for the next generation of offspring from the likes of him. Personally in cases like this it warrants a death penalty.

All this pain, fear and misery in communities caused by the so called war on drugs. Get them legalised. Just like prohibition in the states with alcohol it just doesn't work making something vast amounts of people enjoy doing illegal, it just creates what we see in these programmes.
Just having a tattoo of that animal cregan was enough to get locked away for ever.

A quick facebook search shows they all live, drug take, workout repeat in the same areas and will mostly be dead or addled by their forties. A lot of links to boxing and yesterdays scout pack seemed to be largely rags. None as spooky as last weeks clearly insane Paris Bostock . Learned that Mr Cregans eyeball is somewhere in Thailand and Arran Coghlan has an amazing legal team. No wonder all the police looked knackered.
Some of the people who repeatedly get away with it have “mates” who get the full force of the law. How convenient.

Likewise, technology is a great help in fighting organised crime but it must help indirectly by helping to apply pressure to potential informants. My reading of some of the cases involving Salford gangs in recent years is that informants played a significant role in achieving convictions, although breakthroughs in cases are frequently assigned to technology.

The one on the run. I know a few stories about that young man, but to see his name on this programme last night was a shock. Silly little bastard.

I'm quite sure the police and judge went even harder to get him once they were aware of that. In fact the detective mentioned it. I have no idea how any sane person could think glorifying some psychopath who shot dead two unarmed policewomen in cold blood then threw a grenade on them was something to be celebrated. The death penalty should be on the table for such individuals.

I can’t understand how all three didn’t get the same, long, sentence. They set out to murder, cold-blooded murder.

It's a baffling one. They probably all said the intention was to rob/scare him not murder but the shooter went off on a tangent perhaps?

Probably. I wonder what jury members feel now, watching the tv last night? They all murdered him as far as I’m concerned.

Me too. The jury would have heard and seen a lot more evidence than we did. 36 years is obviously a large sentence, I presume/hope that was a minimum tariff? So go in at 28, out at 64, that will sink in soon. Personally I think the starting point should be 40 years for murder. You see these packs of teens stabbing one person and killing them, such savagery deserves a savage sentence. At 20 if they get 16 years they're out at 36, they can have a pretty full life of maybe a good 40 years or more, the victim is still dead. If they know the earliest they're coming out is 60 I'm sure a fair few will think twice.

He knew who he wanted to kill he ran past the other one at the door until he got the top man, lucky boy

Worth remembering we are watching a very heavily edited, at points dramatised tv program.

They're telling a story from one side. The court would have heard it from both sides and with evidence for the defence as well. There's probably a good reason why the other 2 didn't get the murder/conspiracy convictions.

But then he attempted to kill the other guy as he was running away.

I guess it shows you they aren't cold blooded, experienced killers or they'd have known who they were going to kill going in, and shot him when he was a yard away before going for the lad stuck in the car.

knew he’d fucked up and dropped them all in it. Didn’t his phone records place him there as well when he torched it?

I didn't quite understand that line when the detective said the car burner dropped them all in it. Weren't they were all fucked anyway because they were all over CCTV going to a from the murder and having their littler meeting?

In general they've portrayed a very amateur looking level of organised crime. It's not exactly The Godfather, is it? I genuinely couldn't believe they didn't clean the gun in the first episode. Surely we've all watched enough TV by now that if you are going to use a gun, you'd wipe it down afterwards?

Also why do people keep coming down attic ladders when the police raid their houses? Do they think an armed police raid is going to forget the attic?
