At the moment Covid is surging across the world but at last vaccine supply is beginning to become more visible. What were national governments doing for the 12 months that it took to develop the vaccines?

It seems to me that the same variants keep arising independently across the world which is quite encouraging because it means that the number of viable forms of the virus is limited and its predicable but its mutation of the existing variants that could create a problem. I particularly do not like the look of that surge in India given that a couple of months ago there was evidence that they were close to herd immunity in some cities.

That sounds massively far-fetched.

What ID are you talking about anyway? You don't need to carry compulsory ID in the UK and I couldn't see anything in the BBC article that said you had to show ID if you couldn't download the app.

The whole of humanity is pitted against the virus but state power is not neutral.

Can do that by opening when it's safe with no restriction on freedoms. Otherwise you're telling me it's not safe so are wilfully risking people's lives and pretending an app or piece of paper will stop it. It won't. It's just a freedom grab, pushing the boundaries to see what they can take away from a re-opened society and get away with.

but what benefit is that to the Government ? it will no doubt cost billions, so i don't see what they would achieve in having people show an app in a Pub.

No but I want to know what's fueling the surge in India. In Europe, there's an explanation. UK variant, and it's entirely consistent with what we know. Unless the testing has changed significantly, it looks like it's growing in India faster than it did hitherto.

I was pleasantly surprised to be asked for ID in asda last month, first time in two decades easily. Had a mask on and my greying beard flowing out of the bottom of it, yet the checkout assistant told me she can't serve me if I don't take my mask off. Apparently the area between chin and nose is essential for telling someone's age!

Luckily that shouldn't be an issue in pubs unless they invent some kind of drinking mask..hmmm..

I opened an account in my Dad's name to get free bets of about £50. I put one of them on Jordan Speith to win the Open which he did. I tried to withdraw the cash which was over £200 and the bookmaker then wanted verification. I sent it, but this was not enough, they wanted a photo of my Dad holding his Driving Licence as absolute proof. We took it with my old fella having the biggest cheesiest grin on his face, he was about 84 at the time. £50 each for me and my Dad and tickets to the theatre for Mrs H and my mum, cheers Ladbrokes.
 
Don’t worry we will all be back in lockdown soon with these inconsiderate bastards gathering all together outside, looks like they believe it’s all over and a free for all shameful

We’ve been the most surveillance country in the world since the 1990s. And for a good decade or more, our phones track our every move. Doesn’t matter what apps you have given permission to, only if you turn your phone off can MI5 not track you if they wanted to.

So they can contact you if there are any reports of cases in that establishment so that you have to isolate if you were there at that time.

Lots of people still live with or work with people with health conditions who haven’t had the vaccine yet who would be under threat of severe illness or death from COVID.
