Dortmund (H) - CL QF | Post-Match Thread

That was exhausting.
Frustrating how slow we were at times but looking at it objectively Pep knew that they were capable of scoring like they did at anytime and had us play conservatively as a result.

He made the correct substitution at an early enough time and honestly if Phil had his shooting boots on we could have been 3-0 up when they scored.

Gundo and Rodri are a worry at this level for midfield. Too slow, but when we get Gundo into their box he delivers.

We were well worth our win. Not nearly as bad as some were saying in the match day forum, but we will really need to be sharper going forward. Need to cut out the concentration lapses as well as improve our finishing.

But that was a high quality game between two teams that knew what they were about.

Don't see how that was a poor performance. It was a Champions League Quarter Final ffs, we wont blow every team away.

Wasn't at our total best, granted, but we kept plugging away and apart from a moment of magic from a well organised side, we looked fairly comfortable.

Foden second half was fantastic and that goal will be huge. Sets us up brilliantly for the second leg.

Keep it going City!
I think it’s fair to say some players made unusual and unforced errors

Didn't enjoy a minute of that other than the goals. Got there in the end, but we looked maybe overly cautious, which perhaps is a lesson learned from previous CL campaigns. Looked good towards the end of the half though. If we can play even slightly better in the second leg, we'll go through.
Me neither.

If we were nervous.

The players Getting fucked over in the quarters for 3 seasons must have played a part in everyone heads tonight.

I think even Pep was reluctant to change thing late on, just hoping for 1-0

I am really happy.

Once again we produce a shit performance in a quarter final against a far inferior team, this time we managed to just get the win but this tie is far from over when it should have been dead and buried.
I honestly don’t think they were “far inferior” mate

verrrry nervy.

Rodri had a bad game tonite, cancelo ineffective, gundo invisible until the assist. I think Ginger Kev was the best player on the pitch, Phil was really good as well. I thought Sterling should have had the last 15 mins instead of Riad.

mental block shit.

Dortmund were OKish.
I expected tactical domination since dortmund manager was some random guy, but they sliced through us with ease at times.

It's gonna be tough the second leg but, you must give everything in order to win the CL.

at least we won, they have to score to progress, so it could play into our hands.

Dortmund is not a bad team.

Wow, that was hard work. Strangely, the players who were rested against Leicester (Phil aside) looked the most leggy. Missed some chances which, on balance, makes the result a fair one, but Dortmund were excellently organised in defence, particularly given that we were on one of our 'go slow' days and, for the most part, made life fairly easy for them. We looked better when Jesus came on and, for me, we missed Sterling, the assist for Kevin aside Mahrez offered very little. One things for sure, we'll need to be right on our game next week for the second leg but 2-1's preferable to 1-1.

Good that we got the win. Disappointed about the away goal but they should have had one earlier so I suppose that’s fair. Too many stupid errors and far too slow on the ball. Kyle Walker is a liability in CL games
I would normally agree about Walker, but I don't remember him making any big mistakes tonight, unlike Dias, Ederson, Rodri, Cancelo (off the top of my head).

I'm sure there are some posters who think we were drawn against the dog and duck. QF of the CL isn't meant to be easy however it looks on paper.
Played well in parts and controlled the game mostly. There were a few too many heavy touches and ponderous passages of play, and our poor finishing was a problem again but we fully deserved the win. They worked hard for it and deserve credit.
We won't steamroll every team, we will have tough games most weeks until the end of the season. Proud of the boys again, it's been a fucking long hard season.

1-0 would have been better than 2-1 but it's certainly a lot better than 1-1so can't complain with the result.

Not happy with the performance tonight though. Very very sloppy all over the pitch and not the intensity we needed to be at for a game of this magnitude.

Badly missed Fernandinho tonight, that same team with him in there wins comfortably imo. Rodri can't do it at this level on his own he needs his hand held by either Fernandinho or Bernardo, hopefully Pep rectifies that for the second leg (and hopefully beyond)

don't think cancelo worked either as I predicted pre-match, coming in on his right too much shortens the pitch, a zinchenko in there tonight with a natural left foot quickens up our approach and gets foden on the ball faster.

Disappointed in Peps subs, jesus on was the correct call but Bernardo should have stayed on the pitch in a deeper role, his energy is vital and we all marvel at the quality of our bench but he's not using it, 5 subs allowed tonight we should be bringing on fresh legs and that's where our squad depth can make the most impact with the quality we can bring on against tired legs yet we make just the one. Strange.

Got a decent result, should have been better but it leaves us in a good position for the second leg.

Great character from the team. Quarter final of Champs League shouldn’t be easy. If he could repeat his performance v Leicester I would have Fernandinho in the second leg. BT and BBC must be a very miserable place with City winning and Liverpool losing.

Don’t think we played well at all tonight. Looked nervous and Rodri and Gundogan were off the pace

Would much rather have won 1-0 than 2-1. Away goal is huge

Hopefully we play much better in the 2nd leg, they will have to come out and it will suit us

Taught a few looked tired tonight, almost got the impressions after 55minutss that pep told them not to take any risks.

We got lucky with the Bellingham goal.
