I was a friend of Freds, back in the 70s. He was a work colleague of one of my good friends.
He was hard as fuck ,and along with Sid C from this forum were the leaders of about 15 loosely affiliated City fans,not a gang as such but we looked out for each other , especially at away games.
Fred saved me from getting a kicking on a few occasions.
Likewise he could also be a tad harsh on anybody who ran from other fans.
So yes,the reputation he had for being a handy lad was hard earned and fully justified.

Great story but still a complete waste of 50m though.
