So...years then? Not being facetious. Genuine comment.
Ultimately, no one knows for sure how long it will be until normality returns. It might be this summer, it might never fully return.

What people here are debating is how we deal with that, with views ranging from “Fuck it, open everything up” to vaccinating the vast majority and monitor the data and react accordingly.

None of us know what the optimum strategy should be.

Admissions over past 3 days of data (actually a few days ago as that is latest data) - selected NW hospitals

Bolton 8 - 1 - 3

East Lancashire 1 - 3 - 8

Manchester 2 - 1 - 4

Pennine Acute 2 - 0 - 1

Stockport 1 - 0 - 0

No surprise that all 3 NW deaths today were in East Lancashire - basically covering Blackburn, Burnley and Rossendale.

Bolton patients fallen 10 in past 7 days - just 39 in now.

Only 49 net admissions today in England. Lowest in some time.

Total England patients FALL by by 22 to 779 - up 37 on last Thursday.

The hospital data is not going out of control even as outbreaks pop up here and there and replace ones where they are getting under control - such as Blackburn/East Lancs replacing Bolton as worst in UK as happened a few dys ago and the respective hospital numbers are starting to show.

This looks pretty good news for the success of the vaccines over the Delta Variant.

I am curious about what people cannot do.

I have heard some laughable ones like three or more families cannot sit inside a restaurant together. Hardly a biggie.

People have also said they don't like booking tables at a boozer. Again, no biggie.

I can understand where business owners stand but not those not financially affected by the pandemic who are incandescent with rage that the date for the removal of restrictions could be moved back two or three weeks.

Because these things are 'no biggie' to you mate does not for one second mean that they are no biggie to everyone. You need to widen your scope of view and understand not everyone has an identical life to you.

My best mate was due to get married last summer, which of course got postponed to this summer. It's now cancelled until further notice. That's a pretty fucking big deal to me pal.

Live music, gigs, festivals, football, nightclubs, parties which involve dancing (weddings/18th/21st), singing in a choir, singing in church. Now a lot of those may not seem important. But for my neighbour, who joined a choir after losing her husband, its something she is desperate to get back. I take my father to church. Its a soulless experience. Go in, wear mask, say a few prayers, leave the building. And families of more than 6 wanting to sit together is important if you want to celebrate. My daughters 18th meal, booked for 20 of us, March 2020, will obviously never happen. 2 of the grandparents have died in the meantime. And my daughter is now 19. But its a perfectly reasonable thing to want more than 6 people round a table.

I keep hearing about gigs but lots of venues have closed down because of lack of demand pre pandemic. All of a sudden it seems more popular than ever.

What you have pointed is a great argument for being careful and following the data.

I'm probably a good example to counter this.

My wedding was booked for 31/07/2020 but had to be postponed until March. The date in March was postponed until the middle of July 21 and finally, we feel like we're going to have our wedding day.

If the restrictions aren't lifted this month, it will mean a limit on our guests and everyone wearing masks/PPE which will ruin the day completely. We'd have around 4 weeks to sort everything out which doesn't give us enough time.

Really stressful - especially when you consider that the only people who're dying now are selfish cunts who refuse the vaccine!

I said not having to book a table at a pub and have multiple families sit together in a restaurant is no biggie. Which of those are important?

Would you be happy enough to open everything up and keep non-vital international travel banned for 2021?

A wedding is important, clearly. As is enjoying the day. That's fair enough.

What I cannot understand is the childish stamping of feet that they have to book tables in pubs, have to wear a mask on public transport etc..

They're not important TO YOU. They're not important to me either, but they may be critically important to some - you have absolutely zero clue about other peoples' lives. Given this thread is a big fan of ifs whats and maybes, I'd suggest that's enough.

Not really spot on tho is it? I've averaged over 60 gigs a year for the last 20+ years. Travelled the world extensively, and socialise more than i should. I miss all these things, a lot.

In no way am i happy for things to carry on as they are. But, would i be arsed if they push back the date to re-open everything. Absolutely not. The last thing we wanna do, is royally fuck things up again for the sake of a couple of weeks. I went to a gig last week, it was different. I went for a meal, went to the pub, saw mates. We're hardly locked in our homes. If we need to be a little more patient now, so be it...
I get what your saying and a couple of weeks might well be fine. The question is, how long is not fine?
September? Xmas? Easter? June 2022? Longer?

I think there is little confidence that it would be ‘a couple of weeks’. Once the vaccines were approved we were told Easter.

‘Matt Hancock predicted this morning that restrictions on social life and business would be lifted after Easter as optimism rose that vaccines will bring the coronavirus under control.

The health secretary said that “some parts of social distancing” and hand-washing would remain commonplace but told MPs he was confident that the most intrusive legal curbs would go as a result of vaccination’

If I remember rightly, there was very little change in restrictions at Easter. Then we were told June 21st. I don’t mind a few weeks. My fear is the 2 month delay suggested by Prof Pagel. That would be another summer lost for most businesses and events that operate outdoors.

No. We are all being offered the vaccine. Anyone who would die (or require hospital treatment) has been offered a vaccine months ago. It's their problem and shouldn't affect my plans.

Similar boat except when we cancelled it for the second time this year we said fuck it and punted it into 2022.

Feel really sorry for you and hope it goes ahead, its been easy to dismiss the conspiracy theorists before all this, ive supported every lockdown, but now with the vaccine I really cant believe June 21 probably isnt going ahead.

Ooooh just in time for winter! I can see it now….’we need to keep restrictions until everyone has had their booster jab to protect the NHS over winter. But don’t worry, it will be fine by easter 2022’

I agree with you on that.

I would probably prefer to wear a mask on public transport nowadays regardless of COVID. I think the table service and pre-booked aspect of dining/pubs a lot better too.

But we can't go on like this indefinitely, and if offering every (even remotely) vulnerable person two jabs isn't enough, then nothing will be.

Thank you mate. It seems like you did the right thing!

Either way, I just hope they let us know sooner rather than later. The more time we have the better our decisions will be.
