Retiring

I retired at 63, lucky enough to have a good pension from the company i spent most of my working life with, also had a pension from the same company after we were taken over by the Yanks, I used that as a draw down until my OAP kicks in when I'm 66 in August, so it's worked out ok for me financially, also helps having no mortgage or debts and the missus working for another 2 years all being well

4 weeks today I move to the Far East and semi-retirement (wife got a fancy teaching job and I’ll just look after my existing clients and mainly play golf). Will be two months before my 40th although I fancy maybe becoming a diving or sailing instructor in my spare time to keep my active and bring a few extra pennies in.

Lucky you. where are you off to?

Bit off the beaten track, Borneo. But the Mrs has doubled her salary and we are ready for rainforests after 9 years of desert. We are very active and sporty/outdoors-y and membership of the local golf, boat and country club is included for us both in her package.

I always resisted the move further east whilst my Dad was alive (and poorly) but that’s no longer something to stop us and it’s a new adventure. We can’t wait at this point. Apparently the house we’ll be given is 50 yards from the beach so I’ll post some pictures if it’s half decent when we get there.

Clearly you’ve put the hard work in. You should enjoy literally the second half of your life! Happy for you. Always good to see grafters have their work pay off.

Malaysian side, Indonesian part or Brunei?

I only know the Malaysia part but it's a lovely place. I know you're used to the heat but the humidity can make a full 18 holes quite a sweaty experience. We more often than not ended up just playing 9.

I’ve been looking at the “feels like” and I don’t think it’s been over 38 including the humidity since I started tracking it in January (and they don’t really have seasons there as it’s 4 degrees north of the equator). By comparison, it was 45 degrees today with 58% humidity and a “feels like” of 53. I think 8-9 years in the Middle East has toughened me up for the task (plus I will be in a buggy). I put a jacket on last night to walk the dog as a northerly wind took the temp down to 28 and I’m not even kidding. I’ve gone proper soft.

I decided last week rather hastily that I am going to retire at 60.
That's another 25 years of work left so I am going to carry on saving £500 a month that I started doing 6 months ago. That will give me £150k+interest to live off until my pension kicks in.

I'm sure it won't work out like I have planned and things will get in the way but having a plan is at least part way to making it happen.

Apologies for the poor screen shot but you’d be looking at over £400k in 25 years on those savings (assuming a very average 7% annual net return):

That’s brilliant. Good on you mate.
Always nice to see people doing well. Work hard on that handicap and enjoy the sunshine

That's interesting, thanks for that. Might even be able to do 58 then haha.
Don't think I'll get that interest though. I just put it into a nutmeg general investment account. Maybe I will look to put it into something a little better in a couple of years when I have a decent pot built up.

Is the dog looking forward to the move ?
