The irony is that the NI protocols put NI in a unique position. A presence in two Single Markets, EU and UK, something no other country has. Trade between NI and RoI/EU is increasing, trade in Ireland overall is reconfiguring.

Which is something Hoey and the DUP cannot abide. And they voted for it.
 
Hoey may not like it but farming itself sees the reality - the "new" standard of quality mark - recognised only here not even NI never mind the rest of the world sums up the futility of Brexit in a nutshell

Whilst, at the same time, telling us to remove our boilers and trash our cars, as we should all be using less energy. Presumably goods will be flown in and out of Ghana, Australia and the like by glider….
 
Seems like ‘essential workers’ was mainly a euphemism for jobs done by foreign types and, surprisingly enough, having told them all they’re not welcome, there’s nobody left doing them. And to think, we were told all those grabbing EU migrants were all working in Pret and Starbucks and it’d only affect the middle class remoaners…..

The elitist Leave crew ( JRM etc ) used "essential workers" as a way of describing what was in fact low paid work as "non-essential" - they either knew the detrimental economic effect of Brexit on essential service and didn't care - the IR 35 changes and its effects on things like HGV driving shows a phenomenal lack of understanding of their actions - probably a result of having a cabinet of entitled independently wealthy individuals - which leads me to conclude that on all fronts they simply do not care about anyone but themselves.

They simply can't do it. Once you categorise which goods qualify, then by definition the rest do not and checks will apply and the Govt promised unfettered access for all goods.

Also, we need to be bringing in our border controls and when that happens (assuming it ever does) it has to match up with NI to GB trade, otherwise you are leaving the door open for EU companies to route trade through NI into the GB market.

The Govt is on the horns of a delicious dilemma of its own making.

I reality is a dilemma born of their own ignorance of what they were getting into. They just assumed that for the sake of BMW the WHOLE of the EU would just cave in to our demands.

Urban incomers are part of the problem. A tenant farmer in Cornwall wanted a house for his family and bought a plot, got planning consent, but the incomers and second-home owners crowdfunded and took it to judicial review (it was in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - but one house near others, and half a mile from a concrete bunker coastguard station). There are a million second home owners - with a vote in local elections wherever they have a home and no control over whether they vote twice in general elections.

"its relative closeness to the UK, being just a five-and-a-half hour flight away"....

So just a bit further than the furthest airport in the EU?

And a mere fraction of all the other places Global Britain is targetting for deals.
