ABBA - new album and virtual tour (p9)

Surprised there's so much hate for Abba!

I don't think they take themselves too seriously and they don't think they've made "serious" music like Led Zeppelin etc would do. They write absolutely superb pop songs and at their best, there's not many better. Even though many of their songs are pushing 50 years, many of their songs are staples at parties and weddings.

In terms of able to write catchy melodies I'd put them right up there with The Beatles and Bee Gees.

Can you - honestly - say you don't like some of Waterloo, Dancing Queen, Take a chance on me, The day before you came, Summer night city, Chiquitta, I have a dream, Fernando, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Mamma Mia, The winner takes it all? Even if you don't like them, you surely must recognise that they are very well made songs, great harmonies?

"Thank you for the music" always reminds me of being in a pub near Wembley just before the Gillingham game when everyone was singing "Thank you for the City" :)

Can take em or leave them , but I know a few weeks of overplay and over hype coming up I'm going to be sick of the sound of them.

Seriously, I think a lot of the hate stems from the fact that back in the day they were the band your parents liked and it simply wasn't trendy to admit to liking them. Typical music snobbery. Which is a bit bizarre where ABBA are concerned because there was plenty of utterly wank music being put out by other bands in the 70s, yet ABBA's music smashes the shit out of it.

Their songs have largely stood the test of time IMO and you're right - even if they're not your thing, their songs are undeniably catchy.

What also tends to go unnoticed is that all their songs are not even in their native language, and to become as big as they have while not hailing from one of the UK, States, Ireland, Australia, Canada, or NZ, is seriously impressive.
