I lived and worked in the South for a number of years. My mom was from Guam (Pacific Island) and my dad was caucasian. Which is to say, I do not look like a caucasian. But only slightly so.

Even so, I felt an underlying tension - just below the surface if not directly expressed - of racial dislike - throughout the South. Georgia. South Carolina. Alabama. Tennessee. Texas. And this in urban areas predominantly.

My overwhelming impression is that a large number of Southerns do not like anyone who is not caucasian.

There's no way in hell I'd live or work in the South now.

Edit - this isn't to say that every Southerner dislikes non-caucasians or is not friendly or is not likeable. It's simply an impression I formed from living and and working there. I've never felt this way in California or Washington State.
