I very much doubt there was 50k there tonight let alone 72k. Utd used to operate a compulsory cup scheme, ie if you want a season ticket you have to sign up to the cup games. They count all sales as part of the attendance whether people turn up or not. I think they still do. Hence their actual attendance is usually much lower. They have been doing it for years.

I thought they'd dropped the League Cup from the compulsory ticket list several years ago but kept it for FA Cup and whichever European tournament their servants at UEFA allow them to enter.
