COP26

Think it was on an economic scale of sorts where blue was singing from.

Many in agriculture , manufacturing and transport are not on the Shatner hit list to pass the Karman line Bob.

Yes we have tax scales based on income but green subsidies hit the poorest the most.

I get tired of the next king of England , elites , media , big banks telling the majority and high paid city dwellers etc virtue signalling on climate change , boring , ineffectual and does nothing for the environment nor did the many plane and chopper trips Sir David took around the world to narrate his work.

Charley Farley telling a reporter who used a gas guzzling car to interview him in his back yard that you could install 30 SMR's or have a wind farm installed that I run my 51 year old jag on wine FFS and only eat meat two days a week FFS.

If he was really a man of conviction he would find a way to stop breathing because that would do wonders for his co2 footprint.

the queen I hear has given up the plonk so lets hope she finds the secret to eternal life albeit she has even become more than apolitical in her formative years.

None of these are middle class families. Most city dwellers are not ‘highly paid’. London isn’t full of elites either. It’s a highly diverse city of some eight million souls, most of whom are far from elite. The poverty rate in London is higher than the UK average.

And a lot of impetus driving climate change is coming from ordinary people, young people, concerned people if you like. As for the media in the UK, it has been rubbishing climate change as ‘nonsense’ for nearly two decades. Not that the UK Govt will do much, it’s a shiny toy for Johnson to play with and any proposals will be gutted by the Treasury.

Wasn't specifically referring to London Bob more so those that will attend.

Once you talk about cost and explanation of same the mood of change swings a tad.

I agree about Boris he is no leader or reformist on climate change , change will come more from the private sector , the market and the power of the individual mores o than Government investment unless the market fails and it could given the longer term financial repercussions of the pandemic ( remember what happened ten years after the Spanish Flu and one thing we often don't learn from history is to learn from history ).

China and India are largely the key and what happens in Africa in the next 50 years.

one is Communist so they can trigger their emissions in a downward spiral with force if they see fit to and on their own people of course and India a pseudo SSDR that still need a lot of coal as China does but the real change is needed in transportation and agriculture and horticulture.

Personally I think their is little global will to enact meaningful change with too many competing interests but we might be surprised although we will never know that a warmer greener world ain't all doom and gloom.

Modelling never cuts it when it comes to the climate IMO not much different when it comes to pandemics.

Our modellers had a death toll from covid in the 100k plus with hard lockdowns last year and to date we have 1.5k in OZ but they didn't figure on 110k small businesses in Melbourne alone going to the wall and we our now have racked up a gross debt of just under a Trillion dollars and a true participation rate that has dropped by over 10 per cent and many having significantly sipped into their superannuation well before retirement age.

amazing how Johnson's plea today was for "the markets" to sort it out and save us. We have had those "markets" in charge for donkeys - surely they have fixed everything already? If not what is their incentive and why can they be trusted to fix the issues they have created?

announcements this week were just words - you MIGHT get £5k towards a new £25k heating system thats probably not up to the job so it appears something is being done

Its yet more pie in the sky bollocks from Johnson its just more bullshit. He has a head full of magic an no intentions of delivering any of it,

He won't be around to see any of his grand announcements come to fruition anyway.

He should focus on the immediate namely immigration levels , covid 19 , the recovery , reducing electricity prices , crime , health and education for starters rather than some ideology which everyone knows is just a soundbite.

the main players last I heard are not even going to be bothered to attend , it will just be another C02 generating event like the last 25 and like the last 25 it will never bind any country to any genuine platform for reduction and the so called penalties for falling short won't be able to be implemented.

Without mining and fossil fuels these types of love fests couldn't go ahead and many like Boris seem to forget this.

He has lost the plot especially since getting together with his latest rug rat producer.

Covid 19 before its days are through will have caused far more real damage to the human race than net zero will because while climate warming is real we have little real idea of what it will actually do the planet other than there is a correlation between the amount of co2 in the sky and the greening of the planet as space travel which will become a bigger player in our future shows.

Both Mrs Q and I will not be around in 2050 so this farce will not affect us but it will affect our grandchildren. It is looking increasingly likely that we will leave them a sh1t show. I am not hopeful that anything will happen any time soon. 90 000 heat pumps to replace 27m gas boilers isn't going to help. To little to late anyone? Sound familiar?

Much wringing of hands - can't do anything without China and India? Of course you can - stop trading with them - this might have worked if we had still been in the EU but now we are a little Island we are nothing.

Not hopeful - but like I said - we won't be here.

I actually don't see climate change as the most immediate threat because we can come up with strategies to mitigate the worst of its effects. Things like severe weather, greater sea levels etc can all be somewhat mitigated and it's a slow change that will happen progressively over a long period.

What is never discussed at these conferences though is the real problem and that's the destruction of the natural environment. For example, people keep going on that we'll be able to give up meat and eat insects to reduce Co2, however the fact is that insect populations have declined by over 40% in just 30 years! In 50 years time there will be no insects left.

I think you can see it on this forum where the irony of it all is we moan about climate change but then we moan about the price of houses and how we need to build more of them which destroys the environment further.

With all of this in mind it's obvious why it isn't going to work because we are too busy thinking about how much electric cars will cost instead of thinking how we can do without having a car at all. Again it's ironic that Prince William passed on getting the Range Rover built up the road to his Earthshot conference but he happily took an £80k electric Audi. This is an Audi that was no doubt built in a carbon guzzling factory in Germany, sent on a carbon guzzling ship to his front door. Why didn't he just get the train?

Perhaps the only way technology will save us is thanks to people like Elon Musk who acknowledges the planet is eventually going to be stuffed so he's coming up with as many ways as possible to get us off it....

you have a good point, without biodiversity and increased species loss, we're fecked. Some will argue your lean towards techno-fix mitigations for immediate climate/weather problems could also be applied to the biodiversity area as well. However i might argue that climate/weather problems underpin a lot of species loss, as well as direct anthropogenic impact.

Biodiversity will be talked about at COP26, after all it's 12 days of talks and exhibition, but you are right it is not going to be the focus by any means.

The thing to always remember is biodiversity, species loss, anthropogenic impact, GHGs, climate change, hydrological change, air quality and so on are inextricably linked. It's all getting a bit whack-a-mole.

COP15, which was held recently (and i think will be finished in 2022?) is more what you are talking about;

Furthermore;

is there a party out there with the balls to reverse this nonsense, heat pumps my arse, who can afford an electric car, where do you charge it at home, where's all the extra electricity coming from, fuckin windmills,i don't think so, whoever scraps this bollocks gets my vote next.

Why must you charge your car at home? You don’t fill up your gas guzzler at home! Yes, I know the infrastructure needs to change in the same way as it changed after the car was first produced,

Great points and I agree we often get caught in the ideology instead of the main game.

Those massive solar panels and wind turbines we want littered all over the planet both sea and land that are co2 juggernauts to construct in the first place and need replacing without having a resting place that are so inefficient anyway as those in the UK , the US and the EU are finding out when the "changing" weather that we blame on climate change anyway does it magic dance.

What they do for the environment , bird lovers ( being selfish here ) , insects and birds themselves well I rest my case.

As for Musk well he isn't attractive to supermodels and rappers who love to promote soft porn to the little ones without his wealth so fair enough on that score another frustrated musician or actor etc but he is in it for the money and influence that money gives him as a rent seeker but good on him for exploring outer space although other than lining his pockets and those of his investors on all thing electric in the bluff that it will save humanity from a world which some of his lackies say is not worth saving.

The problem is when you get rich enough you have too much time of your hands (LOL).

it only takes a couple of minutes to fill my gas guzzler up for a week, if you think the queues for petrol were bad wait until youv'e got people looking to charge their cars up if they don't have a charging point at home when theres about 40million cars on the road. It's all well and good if they sort out the infrastructure but there doesn't seem to be any rush at the moment

Exactly, all we are doing is resolving our consumer problems. It's like hey you can't have a petrol car anymore so we've invented one that doesn't run off petrol, keep calm and carry on.

No-one is considering the hard questions like why do we have cars? We didn't have them 100 years ago nor in the other 30,000 years of human history so why do we now? This question sounds radical nowadays but in the context of climate change thinking of it as radical is why climate change and other problems will continue.

COVID gave us the opportunity to really make a difference here by requiring a big chunk of people to work from home yet they're now saying that we should get back into the office to save the economy!? I.E, get your arse to work because it's okay to pollute providing that companies don't go bust.

At this point we may as well go back to burning coal and make life easy for ourselves. The route that we're going down is one where our ship is sinking but we choose to pump the water out instead of fixing the gigantic bloody hole in the hull.
