Russian invasion of Ukraine

Looks like Russia is playing games again, preparing to attack the Ukraine. Another major build up of forces on the border with US intelligence warning it's likely to go hot this time.
Surprised it's taken so long after the US threw Afghanistan to the wolves.

Can see this happening. With Ukraine not yet a NATO member, they will get away with it.

Ukraine has been a thorn in the side of Russia ever since the break up of the Soviet Union. Can't help thinking that this is just a smokescreen for Putin to dispatch Zalensky and install a Russian puppet government rather than an actual land grab. It would certainly help tidy up a few Trump era loose ends amongst other things.

Who knows; give it 6 to 12 months and we'll might see the emergence of another 'Hunter Biden's laptop' story... just in time for the US mid-term elections.

There's no chance of them going into Ukraine. Even if they did it and there was no military response from anyone else, there would be an economic response and currently they're still tackling the pandemic. Numbers in Russia are supposedly amongst the worst in the world. They cannot afford to be hit hard economically and that's what would happen if they went into Ukraine, couple this with the cost of war and it'd ruin them.

If anything this is all posturing as they're quite a nationalistic country and nothing distracts the population more from how bad things are than flexing your military muscles.

If they did it would be the same strategy as Crimea and limited to the Russian speaking separatist self-declared republics. Personnel wearing uniforms without flags and markings and slow awkward annexation.

I think vaccine issues in Russia could precipitate a land grab. They have Western Europe by the balls with gas supplies and with a senile US President at the helm it gives them the opportunity.

I'd take the so called 'senile' guy over the previous Russian puppet any day of the week.
Sadly, both were/are shit at their jobs.Trump was a disaster but currently Biden is worse - Somthing I woukd have said was impossible back last October. Sadly events have proven otherwise.

You think Afghanistan was anything other than a disaster?
The USA is out of a war that's pointless and unwinnable - with the brief downside attendant to less than optimal withdrawal. A withdrawal by-the-by that Trump was unwilling/unable to accomplish.

Of course.
If Trump hadn’t already surrendered to the Taliban Biden might have had some more palatable options.
I'm a centrist Democrat - and am largely in favor of Biden.

That said, Biden was going to pull the USA out of Afghanistan no matter what. Perhaps the timeline might have been better - perhaps a more orderly withdrawal could have been put in place - if not for the previous administration's policies. Then again, perhaps not.

The British, the Russians and now the Americans.

No one leaves Afghanistan well.

Agreed.
Following the Trump surrender, the only way the ensuing chaotic withdrawal could have been avoided would have been to send more troops in temporarily to better manage the withdrawal. That would have caused a flare up in hostilities with more US casualties so it was never going to happen. Trump actually boasted that there was nothing that could have changed the timeline and it ended up looking like it was a Biden fuck up.

Some rumblings Putin planning an all out invasion.

Times Radio currently covering it. Giving Belarus agreement to shut down gas lines if the EU kick off.

Had to be a reason for those American bombers fizzing around Gloucestershire.
