Yes then were the good old days. 3 Express buildings Fleet St, Manchester and Glasgow, the Printworks or Kemsley as we knew it and Whalens trucks taking the papers to the station. All in the days before WhappingHe was a very powerful man then :)
I started at my old company in 1977 and it was hard to believe how much power the union (NATSOPA) had there. Anything to do with production such as overtime had to be negotiated with the FOC before anything could happen. If they needed one guy to stay on for half a hour to get an urgent job out the management would engage in talks with the FOC and an agreement was usually reached on the basis that six guys would get two hours at overtime rate.
