Russian invasion of Ukraine

Metalblue. Apt user name for your comment. I don’t think it’s unrelated. As well as significant amounts of the more common types of natural resources the Ukraine has rare deposits of many of the new materials needed for modern technology production.

As a bargaining chip these deposits are maybe worth more in the longer term to the Russians than sanctions and threats against the new gas pipeline.

I would be more impressed with the U.K. response if successive governments had not already sold half of Londons real estate to our communist friends.

You should be pleased by this story - and about bloody time as well! (not you being pleased obviously but that they are taking some action)

Putin has played a blinder.

He's embarrassed the UK even more along with NATO and Biden.

They are going to look a bit silly demanding sanctions on a country that's had its little war game within its borders and is going home.

I’m not so sure.

Latest news is that Russia has brought more units forward including a field hospital. Is planting stories about Ukrainian attacks and genocide in domestic media. Is flippantly disregarding concerns from the world which signals they have no genuine interest in a diplomatic solution.

Actually there are parallels with the way Putin is behaving and the way hitler did. It’s like he is actually mimicking him with the narrative.

So despite some earlier optimism this points to this happening, and very soon. I still hold out hope I am wrong and end up looking a bit silly but that hope does seem somewhat forlorn.

all this going backwards and forwards about wether theyr'e moving troops is bollocks they can see everything that moves via satellite so its pretty pointless lying about it because it will all come out in the end

Agreed. It’s this shit that’s not easy to verify and will trigger it

Ukraine and Russia-backed rebels have accused each other of violating a truce agreement by opening fire in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region.

The rebels said several locations under their control were shelled by Ukrainian troops in the past 24 hours, as Kyiv was attempting "to escalate the conflict".

Ukraine's forces said they were abiding by all the agreements, accusing the rebels of shelling the town of Stanytsia Luhanska "with special cynicism" and injuring two civilians.

There has been no independent verification of these claims.

We’ll then have the west squabbling with itself over who is telling the truth and who is fibbing. Which is pretty much how Russia will want it to play out.

USA created a lot of this situation by trying to influence former Soviet states to join NATO. Russia doesn't want NATO (and the US) right on its border. The US weren't exactly keen on having Russia in Cuba in the 60s were they? Both countries run by dickheads trying to see who has the biggest cock! Hopefully things will calm down and they can all go for a cup of tea!
Or maybe we should look at how Russia behaves with regard to the former Russian states. Constant political meddling of the worst kind, poising democratic leaders and backing right wing authoritarian arseholes. Invading them unprovoked and making demands that they dont do things that have nothing to do with Russia.

Yes the US did that in the 60's with Cuba / Vietnam. But that was 70 years ago.

Metalblue. Thanks for sharing. Better late than never on introducing controls. Teresa May made a lot of noise on this but did not seem to be able to do much.

Downplaying the unimaginable horrific consequences of a conflict and sticking to footy related stuff. Let’s see how our friends in the press portray Russian ’soft power’ investment via ownership/sponsorship in UK football and other sports and how UEFA deal with major sponsors like Gazprom.

No doubt they will be as balanced as they are with their views on our owners.

In other news I bet Raab is pleased that he supported the awarding of the Downing Street media room refurbishment to a Russian company. Clearly no British company able to do the job.

Putin looks a miserable **** but does he really want a world war ? Is that his long term aim?

It can't be..........can it?
It's not.

US has some new toys they want to try out in the battlefield. If you look closely there's a pattern with recession and them going to war. Looking more hawkish by the day.

CNN rating are down as well hence their full on war stance gaslighting the nation. Yet they have the gall to call RT out for propoganda.

Not long ago news organisations reported the news... Now they are making the news.

You seem hell bent on defending Russia actions and pinning this all on the US. Maybe you just want to hold a contrarian position to bring another viewpoint to the conversation - which isn’t a bad thing.

Anyroad to suggest this is all because the US wants to use some new toys is fanciful - let’s just examine the facts; The build up of 130k+ troops on the Ukrainian border is, according to the Russian, military exercises. But the international norm is to announce these months in advance, you know, to prevent any troop/equipment movement being seen as aggressive/ unexpected. In November last year the Russians had massed best part of 100k troops, it wasn’t until December they spoke about any sort of military exercise with Belarus - which they couldn’t give any dates on other than sometime in February - a rather hastily arranged excuse / smoke screen some might say.

To look at recent Russian behaviour- In 2020 they made last minute and significant changes to pre-planned military exercises that they didn’t notify the west about but they went to significant lengths to reassure NATO that they were benign and planned. But the critical point is they were at least pre-planned, weren’t in contentious regions and the west took Russian reassurances at face value. On the flip side of this - if they were with malice intent they might have made more effort to conceal these latest deployments.

Only Putin knows what he is thinking.

What complete and utter bollocks! At least you are consistent , do you believe anything you type?

Currently it suits him to keep the threat level high - regardless of any truth - as it distracts people whilst he gets on with his shit
You don't think the threat level is high?
Biden is in lock step with Johnson as to the threat Level. 5 eyes intelligence briefings are being published as Russia actually orders things to be done before they happen. I don't think it will stop Putin from invading. Indeed, I expect it to happen two or three days after the Winter Olympics finishes.
Next Tuesday or Wednesday.
