Russian invasion of Ukraine

They have numbers but they are going up against more advanced equipment. A lot of Ukraine’s military pieces are inherited from the soviet era, one thing Putin does instead of spending on his people and their living standards. All their money goes on keeping up with the yanks, there are Russian equivalents of the F22, Ukraine has ancient Mig 29s.
I honestly think a war in Ukraine will do a lot of damage to the Russian army and their economy. The influx of hand held missiles javelins, stingers etc will destroy many tanks and vehicles.. . Ukraine may not have the tech but they will kill 10,000s of Russians and the Guerilla warfare if they occupy with be horrific, those ukrainians are fighters for sure.. Russia is kinda screwed either way in this now, they're damned if they do damned if they don't

Back in the Cold War 80’s.I served on Royal Navy air defence destroyers. Life expectancy of about 25 mins if it kicked off. Which equated to the number of missiles they carried.

In Blackadder Goes Forth the nickname for the trainee pilots was " The 20 minuters"!!
Lieutenant George thought it was how long it took to train them.
But it was actually their life expectancy once they were in the air!!

What are the chances of the generals in Russia turning on Putin? The news now saying he’s been isolated for nearly two years from everyone and might not have all his marbles. Surely others can see this could go down hill rapidly. If they invade there will be bloodshed, what then when the economic sanctions start to basically starve the population of Russia does this have a domino effect and we end of with WW3. And finally where will they shift the CL final too!

In WW2 the main way to beat the enemy was to build planes faster than they could shoot them down. That's why we won the Battle of Britain, Spitfires were great aircraft but a lot has to be said for the industrial complex that churned them out so quickly as well as the many pilots who lost their lives as a result.

I just read that the factory in Birmingham built 12,000 of them over the war period which is ridiculous considering the RAF barely has 200 combat aircraft in total nowadays.

If the Germans had figured that out and managed to bomb our manufacturing capability instead of the cities then we probably would of lost.

I think in the end our only downfall was available pilots but we had pilots from all over the world coming in to help.

Mig 29 still a capable fighter in terms of maneuverability and speed but doesn't have particularly sophisticated avionics. They should be relatively easy for more modern/up to date fighters to take out, but it's not a given. They could still do some damage.

Bottom line in warfare is all about attrition. Numbers count.

Independent and democratic does not necessarily equate to economically stable.
Currently Ukraine has GDP per capita of approx 9,000 USD. Russia 26,000 USD.
Well, with half the Russian military camped around your borders then you’re never going to have the chance. That’s all they want.

Despite the sabre rattling on both sides I doubt anything too serious will happen.
The US might impose sanctions but Europe in the midst of escalating energy costs will not want to stop Russian gas supplies.

You do know it harms Russia too if they don't get to sell their gas, it isn't a one way street and they don't have us by the bollocks.

They have been building up an enormous reserve of gold, most likely preparing for a scenario where they are cut off from trade with Europe. Also, don’t forget that Putin met recently with President Xi, where he undoubtedly will have come to some agreement on the kind of economic support that China was willing to offer. Russia can probably afford this conflict without feeling too much pain. Europe will experience pain almost immediately.

I dunno how I would feel about creating a Chinese monopoly over Russia.. Xi would gladly fuck them over too if it benefitted China.

How can you possibly know that they will be alright financially. I think ,with huge sanctions on them from the western economies ,that the Russian people will suffer

They did bomb the supermarine factory and delayed some production, during Germany’s invasion of France over 250 German fighter pilots were captured and were due to be shipped to Canada to be interred, never got done France dropped her knickers and the pilots were liberated and had another crack in the BoB
