Russian invasion of Ukraine

While Beijing and Moscow both take a hard stance against perceived foreign interference into their own internal affairs, it does not necessarily mean that each state will publicly defend the other's treatment of minorities or policies toward disputed territories. Russia is an increasingly revisionist power, while China tends to seek a stable world order without expansionism beyond China, except for Taiwan

As trading partners they seem to have a new shared agreement, on how to be a world influence and they are ideologically miles apart as is seen in Chinas policies in Africa and South America.

Russia will be able to still trade with china and many others so sanctions will not affect them, but China will stay out of this beyond that, as they gain nothing from getting involved.
Building Chinese Islands in the South China Sea is not being a "nice guy".

Putin will take the whole country very worrying times. How do you deal with this kind of narcissistic loon of dictator? No diplomatic outcome would work imo he’s been hellbent on taking Ukraine he’s acting on previous Russian history anger and emotion he has no rational thought process. Very sad times for Ukraine and the wider international community.

The only slight crumb of comfort is that the Americans and the rest of us haven’t got Trump directing the West’s response!
While that's true, what we do have is an incompetent serial liar leading our response and using it as a means of distracting attention away from the domestic shitshow created by him and his Eton educated chums. Johnson clearly sees this as a cynical opportunity to cement his place in history as a latter-day Churchill, heroically leading the country out of a global conflict as opposed to the worst prime minister in living memory. We can only hope that, in common with the Cuban Missile Crisis of the sixties, the world steps back from the brink of war thereby avoiding bloodshed and allowing Johnson and his cronies to receive the punishment they so richly deserve.

You mean the Spratly Islands? Well the main condemnation was Chinas destruction of coral reefs.
Malaysia, Taiwan, China, the Philippines and Vietnam all have military bases on them and the UNCLOS recomndations on how to end the dispute is one time China and Taiwan are in agreement in rejecting it.

But thats for another thread back to the Ukriane

There's some major parallels with how WW2 started.

False flag, sending troops over.... we know what happened next

All true, however Johnson has made the U.K. pretty much irrelevant on the world stage unless he’s prepared to do something about Russian money in London. The key players in the response to Putin are the US, EU and NATO.

Sanctions could do a lot to Putin, but our government isn’t serious.

Most of Russias biggest companies are joint listed on the LSE, all of his Oligarchs have huge assets stored in London, just using the Magnitsky act to its full powers would genuinely cause him massive issues…but he’s worked out that this government has no appetite for it.

We didn’t do anything when he used nerve agents to murder people on British soil, his old KGB mate lebedev is a fucking Lord and is chums with Boris.

Sanctions could do a lot, but he knows there are no sanctions coming
Johnson has just announced he will announce sanctions against Russia this afternoon and hinted the start will be taking Russian businesses off the stock exchange

Only way they stop him is from the inside, there are people within the Russian military that aren’t happy with this action. If Russians start coming back in body bags in large amounts will there be the appetite to expand into Ukraine?

A son about to turn 15 later this year, having put his life on hold for two years already.

What a fucking world I brought him in to.

Sanctions won't mean jack shit to a Russia which is aligning itself to China and a shared ideology to do whatever the fuck it wants.
Shite mate, politicians playing with normal peoples lives. It doesn’t often end well for war mongers but the worryingly collateral damage could be the ultimate one. I’m not going to lie, as a 14 year old I lived through a day in the Yom Kippur war when Nixon put the USA on red alert, it took me a long time to get over that resulting in my parents agreeing with my School to give psychiatric counselling as I had gone from a pleasant, hard working student to a right horrible kid. I was ashamed of myself in the end. I’m now suffering again with this, I’m having to drink a few beers at night to get some sleep, it’s occupying all my thoughts, there’s diversions but it’s there in my mind and I’m not coping very well. I’m going back to my 1973 MO, I’m not going to listen to any news or watch any TV that talks about this and I’ll not look at this thread anymore.

I feel for you, your son and all kids that will be confused by this situation, I just wish someone would stick a bullet in Putin’s head, he’s a psychotic tosser, probably loving it.

Minor correction - son of KGB Lebedev is the lord, I think.

The rest though seems pretty clear. The blustering blimp this morning could barely put sentences together this morning, but I'm sure the government will be "very clear" and the sanctions will be "tough". I'll be very surprised if non-govt sources think sanctions are more than cosmetic.

Ah I see,it's where his aides fly away in then is it

Its an EMP hardened plane that the President and his staff will live on while a nuclear war is going on. it will fly around and be refuelled indefinitely, Harder to hit a moving target.

While I dont doubt the bunker under the white house is very hardened is it enough to take multiple very very large nukes that would land on it.

Putin's appetite will be undimmed however many Russians are killed. The key thing is that he controls state media so any bad news will be largely suppressed. His internal security structures will be such that any opposition to the regime will be quashed very quickly, and opposition from within is unlikely because he will have his own loyalists in all key positions. Any concerted opposition would require a conspiracy between a large number of senior military figures and the chances of that going undetected will be somewhere near zero.

Poisened umbrella it is then.

Don't forget him and his peers will likely have to take the brunt of climate change.

I do feel for the youth of today.
