Russian invasion of Ukraine

So several banks and 3 individuals subject to sanction.

Anyone in the know on them who could tell us what if any impact it will have on Russia/Putin would be appreciated?

Its all nonsense of course. Why on earth would Putin want the UK out of the EU?

I’m not entirely convinced he wanted Leave to win. The constant carping of the Leave campaign was probably sufficient, incessantly casting doubts over the future of the EU.

Now we are out the EU actually looks stronger in many ways. Putin seeks division in the west and Brexit actually happening a major source of discord has been removed.

Still, I’m sure he had a laugh over the outcome, especially given how little it cost. Putin has discovered that the West is full of greedy individuals who would sell their grandmother for a few roubles.

It is absolutely imperative now that NATO shores up its Eastern borders leaving Russia under no illusions that they will be defended at all costs.
Gold star for you - this is exactly our goal. Before Putin started waving his dick about this would have been an unjustifiably provocative act. Now it's all good and Putin gets the bit(s) of Ukraine he wants.

None of the sanctioned banks are London based - none of them are large entities. The 3 named oligarch's were sanctioned by the USA 4 years ago - with everything with this lot its just hot air

From what I have seen of the sanctions Boris is suggesting I don't see any that would have Putin do anything but laugh. Russian leaders do not have to respond to wealthy Russions who have some of their assets frozen. Banking restrictions in the west, so what, there is plenty of financial options in Asia. Closing a gas pipe that so far has not been opened, what. Boycotting Russion oil, fine lets see who blinks first the west who will be paying ransom level prices or Russia who can supply less into the market but still get the same revenue from the higher price. Like most of Boris's posturing it won't convince anyone and Putin will ignore him.

It’s half hearted and designed to cause minimum damage outside Russia IMHO, it leaves room for the UK to escalate but they should have gone in hard IMHO. Both Sberbank and VTB bank should have been a target.

I imagine Ukraine will be very disappointed

So when you said we’d come off worse with sanctions you were merely wanting to highlight that the UK was being hypocritical? Bit weird but ok.

For the record the trade deficit of £1bn is irrelevant in the overall scheme of things. We are able to wipe out billions from the Russian economy at the stroke of a pen. Only question remaining is how big is the UK government going to go - and how much they think they need to keep in reserve. Personally I’d go all in now.
I’m saying the UK are being hypocritical because they have recently, illegally, invaded a sovereign country, which broke international law and they are now talking to the international community about another country doing the same thing.

Despite the heinous actions of up to just 11 short years ago, leaving a country in ruins with a death toll of over 500,000 innocent civilians, the UK has now found regard for international law, and as such wants to punish Russia, (that’s admirable, maybe the Russians should have cut the gas off after the UK invaded Iraq?).

In regards to the sanctions, Boris only wants to go after the people and companies linked to people in Russian government as he knows it’ll hurt the UK more than Russia otherwise. Russia have already said they’ll retaliate with sanctions of their own, and they provide 34% of UK gas, Boris Johnson is a first class idiot and he’s playing with fire to cover his own fuck-ups domestically.

It doesn’t matter where they are based - UK based banks and businesses won’t be able to trade with them.

I have a grandaughter a similar age who is getting counselling at school and she is very fortunate that it is available. I think the mental health of our youngsters should be getting a far higher profile than it is.
Was only thinking this the other day. My lad is 18 and when I was 18 we had the Gulf war kicking off. The difference between then and now is sheer volume of news and information being thrown at people. Back in the early 90s yep we had 24hr news but turn that off and don't bother reading the paper, other than the sport of course ;-) and you were cocooned from it all. Now it's just a constant bombardment through social media, news companies looking for clicks etc which is not good for anybody.

Don't know where your figure of 34% is from. The BBC is reporting a figure of 3%..that's for gas, oil is probably far higher as Russia is the second largest exporter of oil.

According to a couple of well informed journalists on the radio just now it seems next to nothing. The three individuals were placed under personal sanctions four years ago by the US , so basically they’ve had four years to disperse assets here into the names of other individuals . The banks named apparently do not have any offices in the UK . According to the journalists it’s basically just hot air and no substance from Johnson .

Was listening to the business news earlier and it was said that banning them from swift, which many are calling for would heap as much harm in ourselves as it would them.

Still, sanctions are meaningless unless they really do hurt and we have to accept the hurt ourselves.

They haven't actually stepped over the 2014 ceasefire line yet. Till that happens sanctions will only be token. A show that we will escalate further.
Even the German sanctions are only token as the Nordstream 2 pipeline hasn't been cancelled.

You never know somebody else's situation, mate.

I have suffered from panic attacks and anxiety for a number of years but recently decided to get help from the Doc.

Been put on 50mg daily of Sertraline to try and calm me down/sleep after all the stresses of losing business during Covid.

In to my second week of taking it and a few side effects and little improvement yet, but know I need to stick with it.

An anti-depressant but hoping it ticks a few boxes for me.

Don't suffer in silence mate, I've done CBT and all sorts to try and get through the fog.
My missus tried a few medications before finding sertraline. Took a while but she now says it's changed her life for the good.
