Russian invasion of Ukraine

I suppose the only long term losers here are the Ukrainians. Putin gets his land grab and puts a stop to NATO expansion, and we get to firm up our (NATO) military presence in eastern Europe under the guise of defense and restart fracking in the UK for our energy security. Winner winner chicken dinner - no great loss as Ukraine is pretty much Russia anyway I suppose.

I posted that.

Have all said it was illegal, your saying they don’t hold much weight?

Even (Lord) John Prescott who backed the war at the time, and was deputy prime minister at the time, admits it was illegal and said
"I will live with the decision of going to war and its catastrophic consequences for the rest of my life.

"In 2004, the UN secretary-general Kofi Annan said that as regime change was the prime aim of the Iraq War, it was illegal.

"With great sadness and anger, I now believe him to be right."

Imbecile, I’m not wasting any more time on this.

And you still can’t address the substance of the argument.

You are a dickhead and you are wasting my time.

Yanukovych, Ukraine President from 2010, was incredibly handy for the Russian cause. Almost strangely so.

So far, the Germans are the only ones to show any balls and actually slap them hard enough where they might just about feel it. Sticking 3 of Putins mates and a few banks on the naughty list and threatening to seize assets that we can't even find and by the time we do find them, they'll be long out of reach anyway is hardly the barrage of sanctions it is being claimed to be.
Pausing the certificatation of a pipeline that is already built isn't slapping them hard. Blowing it up would be though.

Didn't even get a nibble with that, must try harder.

Being reported by the BBC this morning that the govt will have to change the law to enact some sanctions, so another few weeks.

Not good enough. Those that demand the government stops breaking laws are demanding we break laws immediately ;-)

Look Parliament can sit and get something through faster than a few weeks if needed but the US, EU and ourselves have all said it’s coordinated sanctions, being rolled out in stages with far more to come so you have to put some sort of faith in that statement I suppose.

Ukraine starting to call up its reserve defence forces, aged 18-60.
They reckon around 900k are in the reserves.
Also told all Ukrainian citizens in Russia to "leave immediately".

Officials added that people who ignore the call up could face "criminal responsibility".

Unfortunately that just creates an ''us v them'' ''right v wrong'' scenario
Sadly this is exactly what this is.

We need to affect and isolate the Russian public in the most peaceful way that we can and which will affect them directly and force them to ask questions of their leadership.

I still think if we can stop all commercial flights and refuse access to citizens from Russia coming into Europe, North America and any other allied nation, plus apply sporting isolation (world cup included - assuming they've qualified) would be a good first step.

If it's an unarguable fact, it would have been better to state that changing the law was needed yesterday or when Truss was dodging straight answers to simple questions this morning.

Doing so would undermine the claims that sanctions were ready to go. it could easily have been announced that the act to change the law was being put in place, and that could have been said yesterday - it would have made the woolly rubbishness of the Great Sanctions Barrage look a lot stronger.

It's difficult to know how much faith can be put in a lack of statements about plans.

It was said in a late afternoon sitting to discuss sanctions and what was the roadmap surrounding them but as ever, the actual work of Parliament rarely if ever gets reported on, but yes, it wouldn’t have hurt for it to come out during the PM’s statement although I’m not sure what difference it would have made as most don’t listen to him anyway

Given that theTory Party would barely have a pot to piss in if it weren’t for Russian money methinks Truss lies. For the avoidance of doubt all significant Russian wealth is linked to Putin

I don't think that anyone could argue with that.

If our government was serious about sanctioning Putin, it would impose measures to freeze his assets held in British overseas territories like the British Virgin Islands and Cayman Islands. Of course, they won't do that because it would put a spotlight on all the rest of the dirty money held at these tax havens including that held by many of the current British establishment. Allegedly.

They have also just voted to allow civilians to carry arms and defend.

The amazing thing for me is that Dan Walker actually had the balls to call it out on BBC Breakfast.

Maybe they will start talking about the catastrophe that is Brexit soon? I’m not holding my breath!
