Russian invasion of Ukraine

It was said in a late afternoon sitting to discuss sanctions and what was the roadmap surrounding them but as ever, the actual work of Parliament rarely if ever gets reported on, but yes, it wouldn’t have hurt for it to come out during the PM’s statement although I’m not sure what difference it would have made as most don’t listen to him anyway

It’s as much about expectations than anything else. There is zero point in a PM who takes to the airwaves and states we will “come down like a steel trap in the event of the first Russian toecap crossing into more sovereign Ukrainian territory” and then admit we actually have to build the steel trap and when we do it is going to be made of tinfoil.

It is also somewhat rich given we have been making Munich appeasement comparisons about other European countries and Germany issued the suspension order on Nordstream.

People do take note of what the British Govt says in time of crisis, hence the disappointment - including on the Tory benches - when the sanctions were announced.

State of emergency now across Ukraine.

Terrible.

Intelligence has obviously come in as only yesterday, the leader was still saying he felt a full in a soon wasn’t in the cards but it seems that has now changed.

Yes, that's my opinion. If it's a clear fact, then it's not a secret from anyone who has an interest.

It begs the question of "why not mention it". Incompetence? Deliberate? Oversight?
It certainly won't be news to any Russians who might be affected.

The only real weapon at the government's disposal is to cut the Russians access to SWIFT> Although they will need the US to go along with it. This will of course hurt us as well as Russia.

It’s governed by EU law (and Belgium), not UK or US. All the UK and US can do unilaterally is sanction banks and businesses to prevent settlements/transfers in UK or US be they by SWIFT or any other method. Shutting off SWIFT will be a quick win in terms of immediate impact but it needs the EU to make the decision I suppose the US could threaten sanctions against the EU to twist their arm - but those won’t be great optics for anyone other than Putin ;)

I nearly spat me tea out when I heard David Lammy suggest the UK close SWIFT on Sky News this morning! You really have to fear for the quality of our politicians on all sides of the house. He’s shadow foreign secretary ffs and he obviously didn’t think this up on the fly, it’s his day job - he should have done a bit of research or asked someone if it made sense. I surprised China invests in a politician of such low quality.

It’s a good move but it’s important we now don’t have to read the usual political point scoring posts that we have seen.

Plenty of threads for Tory bashing.

I get a feeling that was being fed from being in the politics sub forum where stuff like that is rife, it will still happen no doubt but hopefully wont be as obvious.

There are certainly legitimate questions to be asked about Russian influence within the Conservative party, but I guess anyone wanting to discuss that can set up a new thread in the Politics forum if they wish.

Can only hope that they are thinking if they step outside the separatist controlled areas then we go big. But given Putin has already said he recognises the whole Donbas region which is what about 2/3rds more than currently held by the so called rebels that has to mean he plans to break out entirely even if they stop at the Donbas “border”.

Makes no strategic sense to not have gone in harder and I mean the west in general, not just the UK government, whom have been tepid. Only ones with any credit right now are the Germans IMHO.

Plenty of foreign workers in Russia need to use SWIFT

The only thing wrong with that cartoon is Johnson is walking to Putin with money. He should be walking away !
