Russian invasion of Ukraine

Is it possible that Putin could have underestimated the response to this globally? Ukrainians fighting back, well supported, reports of mass protests, strong sanctions, widespread condemnation from global leaders, 150 Russian officials signing a public letter condemning the war, young Russian soldiers being captured and dying in a war that Russian the public simply doesn't want, global sports stars coming out against it, the hacking and so on, the mass dropping and separation of huge firms from their Russian ties, Champions League final loss etc...some of it seems trivial, yes, but at what point does it all add up to become his own potential downfall? And it's only just getting started too. Maybe im just being naive here.

I don't think they will care about protests outside Russia to be honest.

I served in the military for 25 years and never met anyone like that.
Three of my brothers were in the army. Gulf War for the older 2 and then Bosnia for the 3rd. Got a nephew in the Household Cavalry too at the present time.
All I can say is that my brothers are still "living" their army memories some 20 years since they left, and can be mildly annoying with it all. Yet all 3 are the type of man you'd want on "your side" if push came to shove.

Its possible, as I dont see any scenario where Russia benefits from this long term, they might capture part of Ukraine but will likely take heavy losses in doing so and face constant trouble from a population who wont just sit and accept invasion or a puppet state.

All these little things add up and we havent had the full sanctions released yet, if the russian population and more importantly the Oligarchy in power start to lose more and more quality of life, the screw is getting turned further and further on Putin.

I really dont see what the end goal is, this will cause permanent damage to russia for little gain.

That's the crux of it is, isn't it? The only person who wins is Putin. No one is happy with this outcome. It will directly affect the quality of life for all Russians as they become increasingly cut off from the rest of the world. The Russian public will know, or soon realise, this.

A few more examples of sanctions from Gary Kasparov

This is what the West should do.

However it's exactly what we won't do.

20 years of taking Oligarch's rubles has led to the Conservatives, Banking institutions, high society (including parts of the Royal Family) and London acquiescing to Russian wishes. We even have a Russian Oligarch, Lebedev, in the house of Lords. We might do a few more sanctions to seem tough but it will continue to be weak as piss.

Thanks to America restoring 'freedom' to the Middle East they don't have the financial means to have a war, nor the full infrastructure since Trump pulled troops out of parts of Europe. Getting into a war will be bad for the polls for Biden and for the Democrats and Republicans that's all that ever really matters.

France won't do anything to protect their banking interests and despite saying they will end Nordstrom 2 pipeline, Germany will wish that things settle down and they then can continue with it.

It was reported today that Italy didn't want a full trading ban with Russia as they wanted high value luxury goods to still be allowed - they didn't want to stop the mistresses of the Russian Generals buying their Gucci bags.

In short, I think Putin will get exactly what he wants, the independance of two new nations and things will settle down again for a while until he moves the pieces again.

It fucking sucks.
