I assume that Sofia Abramovich is the Chelsea owner's daughter. There's truth in what she says, though.
This isn't like the annexation of Crimea, which was very popular. I mentioned last night that the kind of educated middle-class professionals who make up most of my contacts here aren't Putin's most natural constituency. However, even most of them seemed very happy when the Russians took back Crimea. They felt it was basically Russian territory that had ended up in Ukraine kind of by accident, so were happy to see that put right.
There's no triumphalism at all this time, though. The slightly scary thing is that Putin doesn't seem to be bothered by that. As far as I've seen or read, they don't seem even to have attempted to concoct news stories in their own media showing how popular the policy is. That's definitely something they normally do.
