Russian invasion of Ukraine

I suspect that most on here are not well-placed to judge internal opinions, such as the govt directive on preventing men leaving. I agree that many will not want to stay, but where would they go? would they come back ever, and if so would Ukraine really arise?

Ukraine has been independent for less than 30 years, and are facing being subsumed into an asset of Moscow.

I think both of those two factors would mean a lot more to them than to us, and I think the govt are seeing this as potential destruction of the country permanently.

That’s all fair enough, except the very last bit if you’re referring to me, I’m not defending Putin, blaming NATO isn’t the same as defending Putin, it’s not binary.

So what you are saying is that Russia would ALLOW Ukraine to join the EU (That's nice of them) and that sovereign nations can't have protection from an overbearing aggressive neighbour on its doorstep for fear of offending that overbearing neighbour?

And you blame NATO for that?

Get involved with air strikes on Russia , the US as well. Putin has a clear run at everything from now on, he's laughing about all this. Not sure how bothered he'll be about these sanctions
Are you absolutely insane? If NATO and America do that WWIII will break out almost instantly

Do they know the whereabouts ? I saw someone earlier saying we've (the west) has been pinpoint them for years.

No idea but I would assume they know where they are held.

In other news Putin had his £75M super yacht in Hamburg shipyards for repair a few weeks back and moved it before work was finished as he knew what was coming.

NATO had 2 options.
Option 1, don’t back off, lose Ukraine to a bloody war.
Option 2, back off, if Russia back off too, happy days, if they don’t, lose Ukraine to a bloody war.

Option 1 is patently absurd.

@Moderating Team How long does someone have to keep repeating disproven Russian propaganda before we just ban them and save everyone else the effort of correcting their Putin parroting bullshit?

We’re only 36 hours into this war and already half the forum is sick of this clown.

The Germans have acted disgracefully - that is without question. However, the Russians will never switch off the gas. They simply cannot afford to do so. It is a major source of income for them which without they are in real trouble.
Just another example of the Germans looking after the Germans and sod everybody else. What's new?
The Germans have got themselves between a rock and a hard place by becoming so dependent on Russian gas. They've only got themselves to blame though because they should never have shut down their nuclear power stations after Fukushima. But we are where we are and the rest of the world will need to step up to try and guarantee sufficient supplies to prevent Germany grinding to a halt if they stop Russian gas imports.

CNN reporting that the Russians have offered some dialogue to Ukraine's leaders offering a meeting in Minsk.

It's a bin lions den but maybe the best hope at the moment. I get the feeling that Putin thought he'd just waltz through the Ukraine but the pubic there seem to be saying 'fuck you' to him.

Not a cat in hells chance the Germans will do much more about Ukraine. They are just not prepared to suffer economically. Western Europe relies far too much on Russian Gas. Since yesterday morning and the start of the invasion the Germans alone have bought $180,000,000 of gas from the Russians, they get over half their gas from them. If the Russians turn off the gas the German economy would collapse along with the rest of Europe. Europe simply isnt prepared to accept much if pain over the loss of Ukraine.
I said the other day, the sanctions should be massive wind and solar farms.

It’s on condition of Ukraine demilitarisation and denazification takes place first so that total surrender and the handover of the government.

It’s not a serious olive branch and more Russian propaganda I’m afraid.

This will happen quicker than you would think. I can imagine that Putin promised something very quick and swift but it hasn't worked out that way. This is one of the largest superpowers going up against a very average military, they should of had no problem taking the country within a day but it hasn't been so easy and Russia looks horrendous in the world right now.

The longer it goes on the harsher things will get at home. Many of these ogliarchs had half of their money wiped out yesterday in one day and any assets they do have over here will wilt away as it carries on. They no longer have access to foreign finance, they only have the Russian banks who have virtually collapsed. Their cushty lives are going to be made very difficult for the sake of something they probably don't care about.

Putins meeting with them yesterday was very telling, we've even seen protests in Moscow. Let's not pretend that Russia is united against Ukraine, it's quite the opposite.

Last we will see if him!
