A spokesman for Ukrainian President Zelensky has just said the country is prepared to hold ceasefire and peace talks with Russia immediately.

He said Russian and Ukrainian officials are currently discussing a time and place for talks to be held.

I think Zelensky has to be open to ceasefire talks at all times, but realistically he isn’t going to accept anything less than Russia immediately packing up and leaving, and can anyone believe they’ll do that after 2 days?

Best case a temporary ceasefire while they negotiate would buy time for civilians to flee and more weapons from allies to arrive, time to train reservists and civilians and organise them.

In times of war the lives of men don’t matter, only the objective matters. You only remeber the dead once the war has ended.

In the meantime, you hope for as many dead as possible on the other side.

War is cruel and not like normal times. It sounds horrible but there’s no sentiment when it comes to war.

Germany spends nowhere near the 2% minimum that NATO members are supposed to spend on defence and hasn't done any serious fighting since WWII. They hide behind offering a peace keeping 'service' whilst expecting top tier NATO members such at the U & UK to keep them safe.

The German military was constrained by the Allied powers after WW2 in terms of scope, ie purely defensive, and in size. There is also a strong pacifist sentiment in Germany.

On the whole, I don’t think Europe is overly keen on seeing Germany rise again as a military power.
