Russian invasion of Ukraine

Trying to control populations when they don’t want them there is going to difficult. Did Putin think this incursion think this would be like tanks rolling into Baghdad in 2003? Tooled up civilians will make this a very costly experience for the Russians, will the appetite to keep fighting be the same this time next week?

when you have been in charge for 22 years and surrounded yourself with yes men I suspect that he had deluded himself into thinking it was going to be a walkover - who was going to tell him otherwise?

News chanels reports saying the chechens are in Maiupol not Kyiv though.

So were they sent to both cities as their are pictures of their apparent units crossing the border but after that ??

This is what I mean in my earlier post, I see so many conflicting stories and stock photos, I have to say we have no clue what is happening on the ground tbh.

The 13 snake island coast guard officers WIth the audio of them being blown up and dead a few day ago, are being reported as having escaped and safely back on the mainland.
Imagine if Goebells and Lord Haw Haw had had the internet in their day?

This **** needs getting rid of as well.

Rigged the election to win presidency, allowed Russia to launch an attack from Belarus and has now taken it upon himself to launch missiles at Ukraine.

Sanctions need placing on Belarus until he's gone and the Russian forces are no longer in Belarus.

They are already included in some sanctions but yes the full weight needs to descend upon him

But if it is easily by passed what is the point of stopping swift. To me it is just tub thumping. I hope I'm wrong.

I’m not an expert, but as I understand it SWIFT is what makes the world tick and it isn’t easily bypassed. Equally it’s not a magic bullet either, it just makes life more difficult for Russia. Moscow hotels are getting people with international credit cards to settle bills in anticipation of them not working once the SWIFT measures kick in. All the measures are designed to make like difficult for Russia and pressure an already ailing economy. But the measures work as a package.

People are right to be disappointed with Germany and Italy putting themselves in a position of weakness with Russia over energy. But it won’t get corrected overnight, just as the City of London isn’t going to fully stop mainlining Russian money if it can help it. So, yes, there is some foot dragging and it will take more political pressure to get there, but we have gone a lot further collectively in the last few days than I ever thought we would and that is important as I see it.

The worrying thing is instead of 30 year old tanks they start looking at the other weapons they can use. Any built up areas where they face resistance will be levelled with cruise missiles.

@bluemoon32
One idea, tell your son that rather than fight, use his energy knowledge etc to raise money for the innocent civilians left homeless by the war. He could use his university mates to raise awareness of the refugees who cannot get into this country. Fighting is for people who are trained. He can do so much to help them but in other ways.

But they still need to take the cities and for that you need infantry. I think the calculation is 5 attackers for 1 defender is required. Tanks won’t work. Not sure creating piles of rubble for defenders to bunker down in is helpful either.

Nearly 8000 russian personel were kilked in the second chechen war that went on for years

I really doubt numbers dead matters to Putin as long as he achieves his aims.

Only his ministers and army chiefs turning on him or an actual public revolt will deter this ****.
I would say that 5000 dead Russian Soldiers will put significantly more pressure on him through the means you mention at the end of your post than 1 dead Russian.

Cheers for your, and the other replies, as it helps me understand that it is genuine rather than bluster.

It was hugely disappointing to see Sheikh Mansour refuse to condemn Putins abhorrent actions earlier this week. Sickening.
There are different ways of playing politics. Just because the U.A.E. decided to abstain does not mean they support the tyrant. Don't let idiots like Delooney use this as a weapon against the club and its owner.
