Military tends to get unimpressed at an unhinged dictator, agree their strategy and overthrow them when they push too far.

At the end of the day there's as many opportunists who will bargain for more power by the demise as those afraid of losing everything as a result of the leader falling.

The Russians are very good at politicking and staging coups on each other.

This is a massive sign of weakness from Putin.

How many of his generals and advisers are going to start asking if invading Ukraine with no end goal is worth MAD?

If thousands of Russians will protest invading Ukraine, how many will protest going to war with NATO over Ukraine?

It’s his last move to try and bully the west into abandoning Ukraine and let him win, but he’s risking everything at home.

This isn't a Hollywood movie, where people who choose to fight in the face of overwhelming odds are heroes and those that don't cowards.

At some point the Ukrainian government will make a decision to spare the lives of innocent civilians, it will be neither heroic or cowardly, it will be pragmatic. That is inevitable.

That point has not yet been reached.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed that negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow will be held at the Belarusian-Ukrainian border.

A statement from Mr Zelenskyy's office said the two delegations will meet "without preconditions" near the Pripyat River.

The development came after Alexander Lukashenko, the president of Belarus, spoke to Mr Zelenskyy this afternoon

Don't treat a nuclear armed state as though it was a pariah. Give him an escape route.
We don't escalate militarily, we only supply Ukraine with defensive weapons as we have been doing.
If he withdraws from the Ukraine then we say we will remove sanctions.
He will be toast if his Ukraine adventure fails. I suspect he knows it too but for goodness sake treat him with kid gloves, even if he loses it.

BTW does anyone know where OPEC and the Saudis are in all of this? They could easily satisfy world oil demands and stabilise prices (with Russian oil embargoed) by simply turning the wick up a bit. I haven't heard a peep out of Saudi Arabia.
