We can all take heart from the example of Vasili Arkhipov.I've posted this before but it was the same with Trump. The joint chiefs have publicly come out and said that there was no conceivable situation where even if he ordered a nuclear strike that it would actually happen. There's a full chain of command comprising of very serious, very experienced military staff and no such thing as a "red button".
It'll be exactly the same in Russia. As it is here. If Johnson in a pissed up stupor after one of his "business meetings" decides to live out his Churchillian fantasy and orders a nuke on Germany, it wouldn't actually happen unless about a dozen generals agreed. Which they obviously wouldn't.
I suspect the Russian top brass have a realistic view of the situation on the ground and withdrawing without a cease fire won't be an easy task. Nuking their own forces won't be too popular, either, at home or in the forces.
