They’ve become world enemy number one. Ukraine are getting weapons supplied to them from everywhere, every man and his dog will have a stinger and perhaps a spare. The Russians are fucked, not a chance they’re taking Kiev.

Of course, words like this or mine on here are inadequate. On the other hand, I'm not much attracted by the idea of getting arrested at a demo on Nevsky prospekt in downtown St Petersburg and at best being deported away from my family. The worst is a stretch in a hellhole Russian prison. Cowardly on my part, I suppose, but there you go.

I have to say, I'm not coping very well at the moment. Until yesterday, I was pretty philosophical, but now I feel crippled by a terrible anxiety (I can feel the heart palpitations) and depression. I have a lot on at the moment at work, but it all feels utterly futile in the face of what's happening to this country.

Anyway, I don't want to be self-pitying. I'm not in a war zone and will cope. Please save your concern, thoughts and prayers for the brave people defending themselves in this terrible war.

Believe you me, I think the majority of us westerners feel the people's pain in Russia as well as the Ukraine obviously. The ones supporting Putin can go fuck themselves, but I think you speak for 90% of your country when you say no war, it's a bloody disgrace. Stay safe my friend

It's a bit pie in the sky right now, but if this ends in Putin being removed, and the west offers an olive branch to the new guy in return for leaving Ukraine, we might start to move on from Russia vs. the West of the last 75 years. Normal Russians don't want to be a pariah state and destitute, we've kneecapped the Oligarchs which must loosen their chokehold on the country.

I thought Russia was supposed to be a super power with hi tech weaponry and highly trained troops? All we've seen from media reports are 50 year old Lada trucks carrying Chechnian rabble and boys. If reports are true, 4500 is also a hefty loss and after a week they haven't even entered Kiev (thankfully).

China is a far bigger worry militarily than Russia.

they have the same state control mechanisms, but with probably less corruption.

their economy provides the world with goods, and has done for years. This has earnt them fortunes which they’ve re-invested, particularly in Africa and Asia.

their military has also been remarkable at copying other countries high technology, in the past few years this has been moved onto producing their own state of the art weapons. The quantity of naval shipbuilding in the past decade is incredible (look at wiki and the dates of when ships built).

… and of course they are nuclear.

they currently don’t have the same ability as the US to project force worldwide, but in Asia they are flexing, and with the speed their navy is growing - their carrier ability has gone from zero to 2nd largest in world in a decade - it won’t be long before they have some equivalences to the US fleets.

Prescient Julia Ioffe interview on Putin and the Russia of “today” given in 2017 at the height of the “Russia elects Trump” period.

Be warned, it’s almost 2 hrs long, and part of a series of raw footage interviews given by politicians and Russia experts on Putin’s life, times and desires for a “Frontline” (think Panorama) Special called The Putin Files.
