The point IS not to suggest these bombs aren't still devastating or destructive, OR that we can simply "brush off" their usage. I hope they're never used as the cost will be unbearable. But the narrative that it'll be "armaggeddon" is a little misplaced. This isn't the 80's, things have changed, most nukes are low yield now with reduced capability to create fallout.

Plus there are fewer of them, we have better detection and capacity to destroy them once launched, with multiple sites across Europe. Russia now has too many targets, with too few nukes that would survive being shot down by even more sites capable of doing so and having been detected much earlier.

Yes, the ones that would get through would be catastrophic; but the world survived Nakasaki and Hiroshima and they rebuilt. In the 80's it didn't look like we would survive M.A.D., today it's a different story. The whole point is NOT to spread fear. We already know they should never be used, scaring people as to their destructive power, when we already know it, helps nobody. I've seen the Tsar Bomba used as an example of the Russian Nuclear Capability many, many times. The fact is they don't have anything close to that anymore.

I don’t believe any mad man will set off a nuke in the near future, but I don’t think you can prevent people from fearing the worst when most people know the consequences of a nuclear bomb. Five nuclear bombs targeted at England would pretty much wipe us out, if they were positioned in the right spots.

Unfortunately for Zelensky, Ukraine has quite a number of far right, and to a lesser extent neo Nazi, groups operating within its borders, especially in the Donbass and other regions that have been fighting since 2014. There are also bad rumours that he planned to go in with Sternenko (a jailed far right murderer, since released) to strengthen his alliances. Zelensky walks a risky path to control Ukraine

For all that, I don't believe Zelensky is controlled by or is far-right. I believe he is genuinely trying to save and unite Ukraine but may be dabbling in dark places that he cannot control.

There is a significant escalation in Russian aggression this evening and it looks like they are preparing a siege of Kyiv. I just can't see how this ends now? Putin will not back down from here for the fear of looking weak and I can't see Ukraine holding out for much longer.

At some point Russia are going to cross another line, be it killing the Ukrainian President or completely flattening Ukrainian cities. At this point, what do the west do? What further levers do we have?

The only way this ends is if the Russian overthrow Putin. Surely there must be significant portion of the Russian population that sees that if they were brought in from the cold their country would be very prosperous given the natural resources they have.

I still have no idea what he’s planning on doing with it, he can’t keep it and if he changes regime we’ll be back where he was before this at the following election.
