Russian invasion of Ukraine

I don't think it will happen because he has bitten off more than he can chew with Ukraine, but if Ukraine had gone according to his plan there are a lot of similarities with those two countries. Georgia has two Russian backed separatist areas (Abkhazia and South Ossetia) and Moldova has one (Transnistria). Compared to Ukraine it would be relatively easy, so if Ukraine had gone well for him and the west had not united against him then I have little doubt they would be next. Stalin was from Georgia so I would imagine it is seen as Russian enough for Putin. As I say, after the experience with Ukraine however it goes from now on, I suspect it won't happen.
Sound like you know more about it than me, and I do agree, had we just rolled over over Ukraine then that could have been the first of many. I also agree that he will now realise he's bitten off more than he can chew. And if he doesn't then others certainly will and I cannot see him getting any domestic support for doing this again.

The Republican party has conveniently forgotten their lord and savior was impeached for withholding military aid from Ukriane and attempting to extort Zelensky who they have been non stop praising.

If I hear "this wouldn't have happened under Trump" one more time I might snap. The only difference is Trump would have ushered the Russians in at the border.
Well they are very correct in their statement 'This wouldn't have happened under Trump', you should praise them... and then when they go WTF? just say, yes, under trump, Ukraine, the 3 Baltic republics and Moldova would have been taken by now...

I don’t do Twitter in terms of an account but sometimes search on there if there’s a big event in sport or current affairs and to me it looked like the American reds and blues were just mudslinging at who’s fault it was. What I did notice was barely any on either side supported Putin or Russia in this, which I suppose is something.

As a side note, Trump’s comments show how out of his depth he is. He called it a genius move just a few days ago and it’s proven to be a disaster for Russia. Trump was either presuming Putin knew what he was doing without looking at the details or he actually believes it is a genius move whilst being aware of the situation. Either way it’s a very bad look.
Trump is simpatico with despotic, cruel tyrants because that is what he aspires to be. He loves everything Putin, Jong Un, Erdogan, etc.

You need more big companies freezing out Russia. You don't always need bloodshed to fight a war

Agreed. People before profit is what is required under these circumstances. So much business can do but hiding behind sanctions and delegating the social responsibility to governments. The same companies that bleat on about, and slap themselves on the back for being, good corporate citizens because they donate a few bob or a few hours to charities/ community causes. I know I work for these hypocritical companies. I’ve fired into one chairman today for all the good it will do other than a “dear john we share your concerns” response.

Regardless of everything going on, the sanctions, the potential war crimes, ultimately there needs to be a peace. The sooner we can find an 'out' for Putin, the better for all involved, particularly the average Ukrainian. Pushing him further into a further is going to make things a lot worse.

I suspect he'll want the two regions the separatists have been fighting over, not because they're Russian, but because they provide a land route to Crimea. The Ukrainian army aren't strong enough to kick Russia out of there now, so unless NATO is planning on doing it, which would be a huge escalation, they may offer Putin the 'win' he'll want to claim whilst minimising the death and destruction that will happen from now. I suspect he's realised the Ukrainians don't see him as the saviour he thinks of himself as, so unless he wants another Afghanistan, the sooner he can get out the better for him domestically.

Europe then needs to concentrate on bringing Ukraine into the EU and closer to Europe but maybe turn down the joining NATO bit. Invading an EU country in the future world probably be a line too far, but then not being in NATO removes part of his paranoia, or at least the part of it he can spew on state TV. Let him claim his victories whilst the rest of us get back to international trade and finding an alternative gas supplier.

There's little evidence to suggest that's true.

For a start, it's very clear he has completely misjudged the difficulty militarily and also underestimated the coherence and severity of the western response.

And second, Ukraine is a very different place to Moldova or Georgia. Neither were ever part of Russia (although they were both under the control of the USSR at various points of course). There is an argument - however misguided - that Ukraine's "natural" cultural home is to be part of Russia. You cannot say that of either of the above.

EDIT: Not sure about Georgia, maybe they were part of Russia if we go back far enough. Either way, it's a different situation compared to Ukraine.

For some reason this twat thinks Russian troops will come into Ukraine from the Moldova too.
