Russian invasion of Ukraine

I think you’re reading a bit too much into the motivation on delay’s. Example; VTB had their assets frozen, the next day the treasury told them they had 30 days to unwind “settlements” (not sure what settlements mean in this context) - so long as such settlement didn’t break other sanctions.

The UK wants to keep playing by the rules, no wonder Putin and his ilk laughs at the west.
Don't think he/they are laughing now

Just about every child leaving Ukraine is leaving their dad behind, as well as their homes and belongings. Fucking disgusting, we need a stronger swear word than **** for Putin. These sanctions need to be stronger and need to last for decades. Stop buying their gas and oil, fuck them fully out of SWIFT, seize all the western assets of russian oligarchs INCLUDING THOSE IN THE UK JOHNSON. Russia needs to pay for this for decades to ensure putin or a successor doesn’t do it again; bankrupt and humiliate the cunts

Putin has been clever here. Building up nuclear energy and plotting while the West grovels to a tantrum throwing Swedish teenager and plant eating hipsters.
Luckily for us, his army is useless other than bombing civilians from a distance.

At the moment we seem to be in a race between Ukrainian Cities being levelled and Russian financial apocalypse. Can Ukraine slow the bombardment, evacuate civilians and speed up the sanctions to the point where Russia's economy is sent back to the 80's?

As civilian casualties go higher and humanitarian situation worsens surely we will cut off the rest of the Russian banks from SWIFT and stop buying Billions of $$$ of oil and gas off them per day.
To speed it up Germany would have to shut down half its economy so they can stop importing Russian gas. I know I'm sat in the UK saying this but I think it's a price worth paying. They will be better off in the long run as will everyone else.

There really is no shortage of idiotic posts today. We don't need another one.

I made the mistake of clicking on the link to that steaming pile of horseshit.

The Times seems to take issue with our ‘world leading efforts’.

Britain will not be able to sanction Roman Abramovich and other oligarchs for weeks of months - if at all. Foreign Office and National Crime Agency have been unable to prove 'reasonable grounds' for designating oligarchs’ @TheTimes

The Times have dropped an article that the delay in sanctions is because the government have been unable to build a case against the oligarchs. It goes on to say that they have been unable to prove that there are reasonable grounds for designating the UK's most prominent oligarchs for sanctions because they have struggled to link their finances to the Putin regime.

Which begs the question why have our European partners been able to act so swiftly? Here's a clue....52% of you thought it was a good idea. ''The government made significant concessions during the passage of the UK's sanctions legislation in 2017 which ministers say has limited its ability to act.''

The article I read was that they were unsure they wouldn't be sued under interpretation of ECHR laws

Not to talk politics but wouldn't be surprised if this is used as an effort to stop recognizing the ECHR, lots of changes come around in time of war.

Not seen much on here about Lavrovs latest rant.
Sounds a bit like he’s shit the bed stating Russia not thinking about Nuclear War.
Laughably states we are trying to bolster our security to their cost - can’t think why ?
Also states US trying to subjugate Europe - let us decide that ffs.

If an army is said to march on its stomach, then it needs the cash to feed it. Companies like BP, Shell, they don't usually write off stakes worth billions of dollars?

If Abramovich is writing off the £1.5bn in loans he is owed by Chelsea, it also shows the flip side of this coin?

He can't afford not to write it off, because whatever he recoups back is better than nothing?

Is he writing off the £1.5bn?? Surely the (ambitious) £3.5bn he is asking would recoup that.

But it isn't nonsense, is it. Come on. The fact that you're bringing up labour shows exactly why you're denying this. And I'm not defending labour here btw. They're all crooks.

I favour the Tories getting such donations off of their books so I don’t think we are disagreeing on the principles. I don’t disagree either the government could do more… I just don’t think the motives are sinister - but more likely to be found in the integrated nature of economies these days.

Would be great to understand the barriers in more detail when this crisis passes and for all of us, not just the UK, to reimagine our relationships and how we better disengage with those economies war times like this (or ideally before)

"We want RUSSIA to decide the fate of Europe, not themselves!"

Well reasoned Lavrov, send the tanks in.
