Russian invasion of Ukraine

I'm probably outnumbered on this one but I'm in the 'call his bluff' camp. It's called mutually assured destruction for a reason. Give 48 hours for indication of a withdrawal or a peacekeeping force will be sent in and make it clear that force will be used but only as far as the borders. Put forces in the west of Ukraine and use that as a base of operations. The Russian military is clearly in too weak a place to fight on the front foot and Putin isn't stupid enough to go nuclear.
I don’t think that’s a given.

Agreed. Seen a few people on here trot out the “they’re just kids” line.

Every single Russian soldier who sets foot in Ukraine uninvited wants either dragging to The Hague or a bullet in the head.

The Nuremberg defence is weak piss and knocks me sick.

Sadly as the war drags on and those Russian soldiers who are seeing mates die, are going to be comitting more of them.

I have massive concern for the Ukranians as the war carries on - it will get dirty. It's a terrible situation.

Lets not beat around the bush, Ukranian soldiers will likely be doing some dodgy stuff as well against fellow combatants.

Someone on TV yesterday (I think), said to launch nucs, there is a chain of command to go through ( think it was said 4 layers) before the triggers are pulled.

We can hope that should Putin order it, common sense prevails within that structure.

We would hope so, but how far has it been purged by Putin and his cronies?

May just be a line of nodding yes men.

You are the victims of propaganda in exactly the same way that the Russian people are victims of Putin's propaganda.
Putin who has banned social media and there’s a sentence of 15 years of prison for any criticism, including foreign journalists.

You really think we’re victims of propaganda in the same way for listening to what the BBC and Sky are reporting on the ground?

You’re not on planet Earth, you’re clearly so far down the rabbit hole there’s no way out for you.

People abused you because whilst residential areas are being shelled in the Ukraine and innocent men women and children killed, you come on this website pushing the same propaganda Putin did to justify his atrocities.

Say it quietly, don't get excited yet, but is it just starting to seem possible the Ukrainians might even defeat most of this?

Increasing reports about the state of the Russian army and Air force, and the destruction of Russian materiel.

Maybe wishful thinking, certainly at least a dose of Ukraine propaganda, but still, could they repel the Russians in some or even most of the country?

Eg

Did you post a link yesterday to a comprehensive piece on the suprisingly seemingly uncoordinated Russian military machine - no in depth training, no real logistics, analogue radios, poor conscripts, missing overall command structures. Cf the west.

or it might have been someone else.

either way it was an insightful long read… which also echos your opening line.

this one is tricky to be fair. From some of the stories from them they were still under the impression they were on exercises until they started to take fire back. They had no clue they were even in Ukraine.

this obviously only applies to a subset of them. The conscripts etc.

this is correct from the reports, they were given some sort of contract to sign prior to the invasion if they didnt sign it it was signed on there behalf and the soldier sent to jail for up to 10 years

The annexation of Crimea took over 6 weeks, this operation is much bigger than that. If it’s costing them a billion pounds a day to keep it going the longer this goes on this will bankrupt them with sanctions biting. Their ammo could even end up running out at some point, this could end up being a fatal mistake for Putin’s leadership.

Now that it’s looking possible that Russia are facing humiliation in Ukraine we’re probably entering the most dangerous week in world history while we wait to find out whether Putin is mad enough to order the launch of his nukes and whether his chain of command will follow those orders.
No point worrying, there’s nothing we can do so hope everyone has a good week.

If it's anything like our nuc deterrent, it only takes one person in the chain, to "lose a key", and birds will not fly
but those in the chain could be and most likely be acting on false information, any normal military person (sane) would press the button if the requirements were there to do so,the chain of command could be told the USA have launced when infact they have not
