Russian invasion of Ukraine

He’s said that we don’t know the real figures as both sides are manipulating the truth. Especially understandable from the Ukrainian side as they need to keep morale up.

Pretty much this, but got hounded down - not sure why?

Unless this sub has turned into some sort of propaganda microcosm in of itself.

I believe Russia has 900k active military personnel.

In total, yes. But Russia cannot commit its full military capacity into Ukraine. In the conflict area, the forces are evenly matched numbers wise.

Faisal Islam (BBC), cited the Lehman Bros research from the early 2000’s, which was never published, and correctly predicted the difficulties in Iraq and Afghanistan. The research focused on the number of troops needed to control a country that has a largely hostile population.

Post WW2 ratio of occupying force to population needs to be above 20 per thousand population, prob 40.

The report looked at “force ratios” including in Malaya, N. Ireland, Bosnia, and Kosovo. Other operations, notably Algeria and South Vietnam – “failed even with a force ratio of between 20 and 40. In Iraq, the troop force ratio is around 6.5, and in Afghanistan around 0.8”

And updated on Russia/Ukraine:

“To extent that it may apply in the case of Ukraine, with population 44 million, it implies to suppress the country would require around 880,000 troops.
For Russia this is an impossibly large number, given total strength of its army is a little under 1m”

He also said he wouldn’t invade Ukraine, the Ukrainians are bombing their own and he would agree to a ceasefire for aid. Don’t listen to a word he says, he’s full of shit.
Exactly.
I think he said “akin to act of war “ if translated correctly. Even if so what he says is pointless.
He spouted that back two months back as well as recently.

From this I learnt a little bit about our own history, I never knew the term Alsatian was made up in 1914 because all things German were considered despised, also the sausage dog, a victorian favourite pet breed had people beating and stoning them for their german name.

War brings out prejudice and ignorance in the most human way, heard some shops have removed tchaikovsky off the shelves, I understand the boycott of russian goods that bring in money to Russia, but to suddenly ban or hate all things russian throughout history seems a tad OTT, will we destroy all of waterstones copies of Tolstoy next.
Or Dostoyevski
Or Chekov
Or the Bolshoi ballet
Or Gagarin
Or Boris Spassky
Or Dmitry Muratov
There is a long list of Russians who are or were fine people.

Chelsea singing songs about Abramovich, stay classy Chelsea fans.
Putin would do better looking for nazi's at Stamford Bridge

Was watching CNN earlier and they were interviewing a senior director of the Pentagon and their most recent calculations said 800,000 or so required to occupy.

he also said that Russia could not win this war as he went into all the logistics issues and financing requirements, soldiers etc

Mark Austen on sky news just now asked US Admiral about a no fly zone. His response was not as resolute as has been of late.

Basically said, the western politicians are discussing it and that the west won't continue to watch much longer women, children and grandparents getting slaughtered.
