Russian invasion of Ukraine

With energy prices now it may be a return to that, my DD has gone from £110 to £230 in one fell swoop, come October it could be closer to £300!
Best thing I did was put in a multi-fuel stove when I bought my house, use less that £5 gas a week for hot water (my standing charge is getting close to that) with smokeless fuel costs me about £3 a day to heat most of the downstairs.

I may well put another in and link it to the central heating and hot water system and tell them to get rid of my gas supply.

here we go, if Russia cut off Europe's gas, how much longer will people stand in solidarity with Ukraine? how long before supporting them becomes too expensive and we become a bit cold and cant afford a few pints on the weekend? if cost of living truly does become very very bad, then we'll begin to see just how much European governments support them.
The majority of the population KNOW what actually matters.

It’s hardly surprising the B word comes up when discussing our government’s immigration policy in relation to refugees. It was voted for by many people largely on the basis of making it as difficult as possible for migrants to get here, whether economic migrants or refugees from war zones.

You may be right, but we'll just have to get used to it.
I was brought up in the 50s when everybody but the well off had to make the choice between heating and eating. The bedroom I shared with my bro was like a fridge, frost on the inside in winter.. We had a coal fire in the front room which was not lit until teatime and which was our total heating system. This was commonplace. And the food was awful.
We have all gone soft.

I'll remember the "I lived through the blackouts argument" next time someone uses it as a sixty year old reason as to why we shouldn't take the utilities into public ownership. Sounds loads more fun than I'd been led to believe.

I don't see why anyone should be happy suck it up and get on with seeing our living standard dragged back 70 years. Things are supposed to get better, that's how it works. People who grew up during the Bubonic Plague would probably call you soft too but I expect you're not especially keen to back to those days either.

Whilst Putin is undoubtedly the aggressor here, some governments (especially our own) have helped him strengthen his own position by turning a blind eye and/or willingly accepting his help for their own personal gain. I don't really see why the rest of us should be happy to pay the price for that.

Back in the 70's i used to get up at 5am for my paper round, it was my job to get the coal fire going before i left.
One morning i couldn't find any matches in the front room so decided to light a newspaper on the stove instead and carry through to the front room, Indiana Jones style.
Lit the paper and when i was halfway to the front room it went up like a fucking olympic torch. Too far from the living room to run to the fire, too far away from the kitchen sink, i decided to throw it in the only bin in the house....a whicker basket.
The basket caught fire, the carpet caught fire, fucking nightmare for a 10 year old kid.
All i can remember is my Dad appearing through the smoke & stomping down the stairs yelling " jesus fucking christ" and then throwing buckets of water to put the fire out.
I was never alllowed near the fire after that, funnily enough.
They treated me like a fucking arsonist for months after that, hiding matches etc haha
Brilliant story can you imagine a 10 year old getting up now at 5am for anything but a piss.

Funny enough we are going to replace our gas fire in front room and I’m thinking of going to a wood burner, a gas fire is easy to put on however my thinking is a wood burner is another source of heat, say this gets all a bit silly and gas is cut off at least we have another source of heating in the house.
Do you have yours on constantly? Looking at the price of wood it’s around £50 a tonne, no idea how long that would last, I’d build it up over summer when it’s cheap hopefully a few tonnes would see me through winter.

Agree with this mate.

Don't really understand why we should take the brunt of poor decision making that has put us in a shit position. I've not had any personal gain from Russian money in the country, why should I now take the burden of the cost as well?

Maybe the public should look a little deeper before deciding who to vote in then

You're right of course. I wasn't suggesting that it was good to go backwards, merely illustrating that if forced to do so, we would be ok because we've endured those difficulties before.
Oh, and we all always pay for our gov's mistakes, thàts democracy!

So I’m 48 hrs he’s gone from “I’ll nuke the planet to the Stone Age” to “I’ll jack up gas prices in Germany a bit”.

And if he does cut off the supply to Europe who’s he going to sell it to? His own citizens will be fucking broke and unable to pay anyway.

He’s seen his arse.

he will sell it to the chinese

Go for a multi-fuel stove mate, whilst wood burners are nice, they’re expensive to run and burn out pretty quick, 50kgs of smokeless fuel costs £16 btw.
I use less than a bag a day (£3.99) even when it’s really cold, and it airs the rest of the house out ok (2 bed end terrace), if I do as I suggested above it’ll heat all the radiators all over the house.

Watching the news, 600 Ukrainians in Calais trying to get to the UK, our beurocracy and paper work delaying them, being told to go to Paris or Brussels for the correct paperwork, for fuck sake our government pull your fucking fingers out you useless cunts and get these people here, our government are fucking useless.
They should bring the laptops , printers and staff to the Ukraine border to expedite the visa, not have the poor refugees travel across europe after 2-5 days travelling through a war torn country.

i use about 3 tonnes a year.
not an exact figure as i dont buy it, its from the trees in my garden

We have a multifuel stove which is on for about 8 months of the year as wife has Reynauds. They are an independent source of heat but be under no illusions, they are expensive to run.

We go through about a dumpy bag of logs every two weeks and about three quarters of ton of ovoids a year.

They are messy too

Is the B word you refer to you are talking Bollox?

Said all along and still think they’re the key. They’re going to need to choose soon how much they decide to prop Russia up and if they do choose to do that, as much as they can essentially turn it into a puppet state of their own, it’s not going to make up for the potential loss to their economy from Europe or the US.

If they decide not to prop them up, then Russia are really screwed.
