Russian invasion of Ukraine

I sincerely hope they don't sink any lower and use those types of weapons.

If they do, I hope NATO rethinks its strategy of support
Putin has got away with using chemical weapons in Syria and biological weapons in the UK. It is implausible to think that he would hesitate to use them in Ukraine once he has invented his pretext. Hope I'm wrong.

They've also said they've discovered the Ukrainians were making chemical weapons for the US.

It sounds alarmingly like they're laying the ground work for an chemical attack they'll blame on Ukraine.
That was what I had thought as well. Hopefully the satellites can identify where can rockets are fired from but can they use chemical weapons from ground launchers i.e. inside Ukraine?

We'd be sending Ukraine non lethal bicycles.

Corbyn's defence policy and on the other side Russian funding and support for Brexit and the Conservative are surely for the politics thread.

Perhaps everyone on all sides agrees that

(1) we've as a whole country royally fucked up our relationship with Russia

and

(2) That doesn't make it anyone in the uk's responsibility (not corbyn, not Johnson) that Russia has enacted a brutal, fascist motivated invasion of Ukraine.

I would like us to sort out sanctions on oligarchs (hopefully will get moving soon) and allowing refugees here (looks like nothing much doing alas)

Yes, and that's far more likely than them using long range ballistic missiles to deliver a chemical warhead.

The bakery they blew up was obviously dabbling with yeast usage as part of a sinister plot to cause a thrush outbreak throughout Russia.

Wars are political too. This is the most political thread on the forum.

Man a lot of these conspiracy types are really 'reaching' with some of these idiotic claims.

Nothing new for conspiracy theorists I once had discussions with a guy who thought American school shootings involved crisis actors who kept popping up in different places (it was just people who looked similar).

A lot of this will be directed by the Russian troll farms, either making it themselves or planting the seed.

Very easy to disprove this nonsense, e.g. Steven Seagal has been in countless movies based on military combat, so it is logical to assume that the images could be from one and try to disprove that assumption.

Google lens revealed that the images come from a movie called The Cartels.

But people in the conspiracy theorists hive-mind want to believe in this nonsense, and will just take it at face value because it is much easier to be stupid and uninformed.

I'm not sure what to type. I don't want WW3 but if he murders and maims civilians with chemical weapons ..... can we just stand back and let them die?

Oh dear.. this looks like the explanation of why we are dragging our feet. Looks like Brexit Britain without Londongrad is skint..

So the UK is dragging its feet to freeze assets thus allowing Russians to repatriate money into Russia (as their economy is in the toilet) because we are worried about that money leaving the UK economy?

That doesn’t even make sense does it? And that’s before we even get into it being wrong.

Back in the 70's i used to get up at 5am for my paper round, it was my job to get the coal fire going before i left.
One morning i couldn't find any matches in the front room so decided to light a newspaper on the stove instead and carry through to the front room, Indiana Jones style.
Lit the paper and when i was halfway to the front room it went up like a fucking olympic torch. Too far from the living room to run to the fire, too far away from the kitchen sink, i decided to throw it in the only bin in the house....a whicker basket.
The basket caught fire, the carpet caught fire, fucking nightmare for a 10 year old kid.
All i can remember is my Dad appearing through the smoke & stomping down the stairs yelling " jesus fucking christ" and then throwing buckets of water to put the fire out.
I was never alllowed near the fire after that, funnily enough.
They treated me like a fucking arsonist for months after that, hiding matches etc haha

“the coal fire” - exactly mate, one fire for the whole house and we’ve all used the paper torch trick when no matches along with using paper over the front of the fire to create a draft. What could possibly go wrong?

I can’t help but feel there are people out there wanting WW3. Starting to notice a lot of the bot accounts on social media are now starting to say NATO need to engage directly with Russia in the Ukraine. Don’t be surprised to see lots of people fall for this and an increasing discourse about it in the coming weeks across the media.

Looks like the Chinese are going to help break some sanctions by launching union pay to replace visa/Mastercard in Russia. I hope the rest of the world remembers this

Just a point of clarity; They weren’t sanctions. Mastercard/visa and Amex left in protest - and good for them. There is so much more corporations can do still autonomously- far too many are hiding behind what sanctions have been applied rather than taking a moral stance.

To the wider point however - make no mistake - if China (or anyone) breaches sanctions in a meaningful way that dilutes the impact of the sanctions imposed on Russia then they will also be subject to sanctions.
