Russian invasion of Ukraine

I talked on Facetime to a Ukrainian Soldier in a school hall with his gun yesterday morning. He was in tears, banging his heart and saying that he and the other soldiers were "like brothers". He didn't have the English but the intimation was they would fight to the death.

What do you say in that situation? "Hope you kill some Russians"?, "Hope you don't die"?

Come on Ukraine.
I bet that's a call you won't forget in a hurry. Puts our problems into context when you see people literally fighting for their lives and freedom from tyranny.

If it’s a discussion about the EU response then I think that’s fine. The last few pages have been about Germany though and conflating that with the EU. I’d say that is more for the political thread as it’s back to misunderstanding domestic vs eu accountability.
Yes you're probably right.
I might have accidentally/inadvertently invoked an EU debate. I was posting about my disbelief at the German lack of support for Ukraine and mentioned them being the financial power house of the EU. I may have suggested EU disharmony.
I realise this is politics forum issue.

I'm not pro or anti Brexit. I've never known enough about it to have an opinion.

See Putin has declared they won’t try and take the steelworks in Mariupol now, will “just” blockade it instead and I guess wait for the Ukrainians to run out of food and water. Fingers crossed they can resupply them and somehow attack the ruSSians blockading them.
Think this might end for them the way it did for the defenders of Masada. Just wish they could take a few of the Russian fuckers with them as surviving or breaking out of there seems nigh impossible.

The steelworks is a labrinth of underground tunnels and bunkers that will be booby trapped to high heaven and full of ambush points so they'd probably lose a ton of men trying to take it.

Starving them out is sensible and hopefully less deadly for everyone.

He said it is so tight not even a fly can get out so he is starving them to death , hopefully we can get some weapons help to take on the russians and free them but i am scared for all of those in there , women and kids and the old with the soldiers , putin is evil and the new hitler

Can’t be less deadly if they starve to death the Ukrainians know they will be killed if they leave those positions. Only way it’s less deadly if for the Russians.

Loads of soldiers have surrendered in Mariupol and are fine including the 2 brits and hundreds that have already been exchanged back to Ukraine. The marines may say they feel they can’t suddenly but it’s not actually true, Russia isn’t going to execute 1500 of them.

They can choose to hold out and hope for a breakthrough or they can surrender but it’s in their hands, which it wouldn’t be if Russia launched a full on offensive.

That is a view if you support the Russians. Why wouldn't you want the Russians not to lose fighters in a war? They won't back down until they are forced to

I think the point was that it would result in the death of less humans overall? I do sometimes think (social medias fault) that we end up supporting 'sides' a bit like we pick a football team to support. Not suggesting anyone should be pro Russia, but it seems that war is a comfy spectator sport for those of us at a safe distance.

From a ruSSian point of view it’s probably the most sensible tactic and one they can all live with because they have no fucking decency. They make the steelworks “out of scope” and declare victory in Mariupol.

Not allowing the civilians and wounded to be evacuated is grotesque but we’ve come to expect nothing less, noble or decent from these horrid cunts.

If Russia take over the steel plant after surrender if happens would they then class this as the victory to the special operation. Azov seems to be here and they are the classed nazis would this then go to talks to take over the area

No, the vast majority on here (which is probably a fair reflection of the British people on the topic) had a lot of sympathy for all that died at the outset. The barbaric behaviour of the rank and file ruSSians means I now, like most I suspect, no longer give a single fuck about each and every one of their lives. They are knuckle dragging scum and don’t deserve our pity.

A full on assault will end up with a lot of dead Ukrainians civilian and military.

The head of the Azovs in Mariupol said they were out of ammo over a week ago so this isn’t going to be a fair fight or heroic last stand like @metalblue seems to be picturing.

Wonder what the Ruskies would do if a NATO warship sailed into the black Sea and tied up at the jetty at the Steelworks
It wouldn't get anywhere near there, given its on the Sea of Azov, and would have to sail under a russian bridge on the kerch straight which connects 2 bits of russian territory, and is only a few miles wide.

The brits haven’t been exchanged back yet have they? They’ve been paraded on the box by the Kremlin because it’s great propaganda- here are NATO troops see we told you. No one knows the fate of the others who have surrendered, their not such value to the Kremlin. You think the ruSSians won’t execute 1500 Ukrainian’s? I wish I shared your faith in them but when they’ll gun down an old woman and bloke in a car I don’t think their moral compass points anywhere near as true as yours.

It's interesting that the leader of Kharkiv has said today that they are "furiously bombing" Kharkiv, yet there are freely available webcams on YouTube showing what looks like "normal" traffic moving about the City.

Surely if it was being furiously bombed people wouldn't be driving about.
